Igor Tudor reacts as Tottenham supporters make ‘refund’ claim after humiliating defeat in the UCL

Igor Tudor’s Tottenham suffered a humiliating defeat against Atletico Madrid in the UCL.

Tottenham suffered a humiliating 5-2 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid. The Lilywhites were run ragged by the La Liga giants and had no real way of getting back into the game from the very first whistle. It was also Igor Tudor’s fourth consecutive defeat in charge of the North Londoners, making it increasingly difficult for fans to see how the Croat will steady the ship at N17.

Tudor’s handling of Antonin Kinsky grabbed the media spotlight after the Spurs interim boss decided to substitute the young goalkeeper after just 17 minutes. Kinsky was at fault for two of the opening three goals that the North Londoners conceded in the first quarter of the match, forcing Tudor to take him off before the situation worsened for the Lilywhites.

However, Tudor’s decision not to acknowledge the backup goalkeeper as he came off the pitch was not something Spurs fans expected to see. In fact, it was Joao Palhinha, Conor Gallagher, and Dominic Solanke who ran behind Kinsky into the tunnel in order to comfort him and show their support. Many supporters subsequently called for the club to sack Igor Tudor after the embarrassing defeat, claiming that the Croatian tactician had already run his course at N17.

Tottenham boss Igor Tudor shuts down ‘refund’ claims made by the supporters

Tottenham Supporters Trust quickly issued a statement urging the club to take “emergency action” and remove Igor Tudor from his position as interim manager. Fans appear to have run out of patience after the Croatian tactician failed to steady the ship at N17. A recent report also claimed that the dressing room has lost faith in Tudor and believes that he is not the right man to save the North Londoners from relegation this season.

However, Tudor has now shut down the “refund” claims made by the supporters’ group following the humiliating defeat against Atletico Madrid. Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via Beanyman Sports), Tudor said,

“Two things, first thing, this is an issue for the club. Manchester City lose 3-0, Chelsea lose 5-2, every Sunday there are big defeats and every time you need to refund the money so where will football be going?”

The Spurs boss added,

“I apologise after because of these 15 minutes because I felt it was something big, but this something big can happen. You cannot control this. It is something extraordinary. I like usually to apologise but I did this time because of these 15 minutes, but all the rest I’ve got nothing to apologise for.”

Igor Tudor claims that big clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City frequently suffer defeats but do not offer refunds, as such results are part of the game. The Croatian tactician then doubled down on his stance by stating that he felt sorry for the travelling fans for what they had to witness during the opening 15 minutes of the match against Atletico Madrid, but he does not feel the need to apologise for his side’s performance during the remainder of the game. He believes his side were somewhat unfortunate against Atleti and that such moments cannot always be avoided.

It goes without saying that this statement from Igor Tudor is unlikely to go down well with the Spurs faithful. The Croatian tactician has still not managed to convince the supporters that he is the right man for the job at N17. A defeat against Liverpool this weekend could potentially prove to be the final nail in the coffin for Tudor as he continues to run out of time to steady the ship at Hotspur Way this season.
