The manager ended Tottenham’s long-standing trophy drought last season.
Tottenham fans will never forget the day their club ended its 17-year wait for a major trophy by winning the Europa League final against Manchester United against all odds. It was a historic occasion that ensured the Lilywhites secured Champions League football while bringing an end to their long-standing trophy drought. The European triumph also meant that Ange Postecoglou had etched his name in the club’s history books for years to come.
Big Ange had stated at the start of last season that he always managed to win a trophy in his second season at a club. Credit to him, the Australian tactician stayed true to his word and ended up securing the Europa League trophy to live up to that promise. At no point did it truly look like the Lilywhites were out of contention to lift the trophy, which is a testament to how well Ange Postecoglou had prepared his players for the big day.
But the Europa League success was not enough to save Big Ange from the sack at N17. Just days after achieving the impossible with the Lilywhites, the Australian tactician was relieved of his duties by Daniel Levy as the club aimed to compete on all fronts this season. Since then, the North Londoners have experienced a sharp decline as they fight to maintain their top-flight status this season.
Tottenham should not have sacked Ange Postecoglou
Tottenham had finally found a manager in Ange Postecoglou who had instilled a winning culture at the club by ending their long-standing trophy drought last season. And what did the club’s hierarchy decide to do instead? They chose to sack him immediately after the historic achievement, highlighting the lack of planning and the absence of a clear desire to close the gap on their rivals following the Europa League triumph.
Ramon Vega has now criticised the Lilywhites for sacking Big Ange and not giving him the opportunity to build on the Europa League success this season. Writing on X, Vega said,
“This is what you get when you disrespect a manager who won the Europa League Cup like Ange! The team is so dysfunctional and out of place everywhere! You break a winning team’s energy with a manager and on top of that a board that is dysfunctional and clueless! This Leadership is a disgrace!”
Ramon Vega claims that Spurs deserve to be in a relegation dogfight this season after the way they treated Ange Postecoglou towards the end of his tenure at N17. The former Spurs player adds that sacking the Australian tactician effectively ended the winning culture that had been instilled in the dressing room. The bizarre decision also highlighted how clueless the Spurs hierarchy appear to be when it comes to the day-to-day running of the football club.
The decision to sack Ange Postecoglou and replace him with Thomas Frank also backfired on the club this season. The Danish tactician was dismissed by the Lilywhites just seven months into his stint at N17 this campaign, strongly suggesting that Big Ange may have been the right man to help the club build on the Europa League success. Frank departed when Spurs had little left to fight for and were stranded in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Fans will hope that Spurs do not repeat the same mistake when they appoint a permanent successor to Thomas Frank in the coming weeks. That is the only way the Lilywhites will be able to close the gap on their rivals next season and compete at the top end of the Premier League table.
