Igor Tudor earned his first point as Tottenham Hotspur’s interim boss after Richarlison scored a late equaliser against Liverpool at Anfield.
Spurs were a match for Liverpool and, after missing a collection of chances, Richarlison managed to enjoy his moment and silence the Anfield crowd. After scoring the leveller, the Brazilian stood confidently in front of the home fans, right ear cupped amid a cacophony of boos. He had felt the pain three years before for prematurely celebrating a late equaliser at Anfield, but not this time.
After a tireless display, it was a richly deserved goal for the 28-year-old. Richarlison’s effort not only gave him his personal milestone of becoming the only visiting player in the Premier League era to have scored two goals at Anfield in the 90th minute, but also brought an end to Igor Tudor’s four-game losing run.
Djed Spence full of praise for Richarlison after late equaliser vs. Liverpool
Djed Spence was a part of the patched-up Tottenham XI that rocked up at Anfield and secured a point on Sunday. He started in an advanced role on the left and tried to stretch Liverpool as much as possible, whilst staying defensively resolute. The 25-year-old kept Jeremie Frimpong and Dominik Szoboszlai quiet for large periods of the game before being substituted in the 76th minute.
Speaking after the game, Spence was asked about Richarlison and his late goal vs. Liverpool. To which, the England international replied (h/t Football London):
“Richy was great. He’s scored a lot of goals for us this season like that. He’s brought us back in a lot of games, so we’re happy with him, and he’s a great player.”
Suspension vs. Atletico Madrid is a boon in disguise
Richarlison is Tottenham’s top scorer this season with 10 goals (nine in the Premier League). When fully fit and running, the Brazilian international has shown plenty of times why he is such a handful for defenders. And he again proved that when squaring up against Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
The 28-year-old’s form and fitness will be key to Tottenham’s bid for top-flight survival. He has impressed under Tudor in what has been a difficult start to his interim tenure. As he serves a one-game suspension when Spurs host Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday, Richarlison will get a much-needed rest to recharge his batteries for a crucial six-pointer against Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
