Tottenham are struggling to maintain their top-flight status this season
It has been a disastrous season for Tottenham this time around. There is no hiding from the fact that the Lilywhites have gone through the trenches in recent months. Very few positives have emerged from the club’s decision to part ways with Ange Postecoglou and appoint Thomas Frank as his successor last summer. The team has only regressed since their Europa League success, and it now appears that the North Londoners could find themselves playing in the second division next season.
Spurs have, quite remarkably, changed their manager thrice already since the start of the season. They parted ways with Thomas Frank midway through the campaign after the Danish tactician ran out of ideas to get the best out of the players in the Premier League. Igor Tudor, Frank’s interim replacement, was then dismissed just 44 days after his appointment, having failed to steady the ship at N17. The Lilywhites appear to be in turmoil, and the situation does not seem to be improving anytime soon.
The North Londoners have now appointed Roberto De Zerbi as Frank’s permanent successor. The Italian tactician joins the club on a five-year deal, becoming the third-highest-paid manager in the Premier League. It goes without saying that De Zerbi’s main priority is to help Spurs avoid relegation this season and guide the club back to winning ways in the league. Only then will the Lilywhites be able to establish a clear long-term vision under the former Brighton boss.
Tottenham could be the ‘biggest club in the world’
From a financial perspective, there is no doubt that Tottenham operate a sustainable model to keep the club competitive. They boast a world-class stadium, a state-of-the-art training centre, and a squad filled with talented players. Ticket prices continue to rise, and the fans remain loyal. However, performances and results on the pitch tell a very different story, suggesting that the Lilywhites have not performed to the standard required to justify their place in the top flight after such a disappointing campaign.
David Bentley, however, believes that Spurs still have the potential to become the biggest club in the world and insists that no football fan would want to see them relegated this season. Speaking on Sky Sports (via X), Bentley said,
“They could be the biggest club in the world. And to think of that potential being relegated and sitting in the Championship, not only financially but emotionally, is not right. I don’t think there’s anyone in football who wants to see Tottenham go down and not be in the Premier League. I think everybody loves watching Spurs. Even if you’re a neutral.”
David Bentley finds it hard to comprehend how a club of Tottenham’s stature could end up spending a season in the Championship. The Lilywhites have the potential to be one of the biggest clubs in the world, and seeing them battle for survival in the Premier League does not reflect well on their stature. Bentley believes that even neutral fans would prefer to see the North Londoners remain in the Premier League and compete with the best, rather than squander their potential in the second division next season.
No club is too big to be relegated, not even Tottenham. However, that does not mean the Lilywhites should stop fighting to secure their place in the Premier League next season. It is crucial that Roberto De Zerbi gets the best out of his players and helps the North London club return to winning ways in the coming weeks. Only then will they be able to focus on strengthening the squad for next season and competing at the top end of the league table.
