Tottenham skipper Cristian Romero has been linked with a summer exit.
Tottenham Hotspur remain at risk of relegation, and following that would be a massive exodus of players in the summer.
Having taken over from the previously sacked Igor Tudor, Roberto De Zerbi is the man tasked with keeping the North Londoners afloat in the Premier League. He has seven games to decide the club’s fate, although even if the Lilywhites suffer the ultimate embarrassment of going down, the Italian has pledged to stick with the squad in the Championship.
However, the same cannot be said about the players. Several first-team players will leave White Hart Lane upon relegation. Should Tottenham manage to beat the drop, fans might witness some stars pushing for an exit.
Cristian Romero’s father confirms price of Tottenham release clause
The future of Cristian Romero at Tottenham has been up in the air for months now, regardless of signing a new contract in August 2025. The central defender appears on course to leave Spurs this summer after taking aim at the club’s hierarchy earlier this season.
Atletico Madrid made an attempt to sign the Argentina international last year but refused to meet Tottenham’s valuation. As per recent reports, the La Liga side have retained their interest ahead of the summer transfer window and are considering a new move.
Now, Victor Romero, father of Cristian, appears to have confirmed the existence of a special release clause in the centre-back’s Tottenham contract. He says Spurs will consider letting the 27-year-old leave as long as they recoup the money they paid for him.
When asked about the rumours about his son’s future, Victor told Cadena 3:
“It’s a bombshell that keeps getting bigger. I hope it’s true; as a Belgrano fan and a father, what more could I want, but I don’t know anything.
“Cuti isn’t one to make statements, that’s why it surprises me.
“He has two more years on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause. The English club isn’t going to let him go for free; it’s between $50-$70m [£37.8m-£53m].
“For me, they’ll want to recover what they invested.”
Tottenham want to move on Cristian Romero
After the Nottingham Forest defeat, Romero vowed to put “200 per cent” into Tottenham’s “last seven finals” to retain the club’s top-flight status. The South American star did not give a clear answer when he was quizzed on his future before the March international break.
Constant speculation surrounding his future has had an impact on the defender’s displays at Tottenham. Since the turn of the year, Romero has made several mistakes and shown ill-discipline, costing his team several points and games. The Argentine clearly looks unsettled in North London, which has reportedly led to the club officials considering moving him on at the end of the season.
If Spurs intend to rebuild properly under new boss De Zerbi, they don’t need disruptive characters like Romero in the dressing room. Thus, the club would do well to sell our skipper and replace him with a quality, matured and young defender.
