Roberto De Zerbi has made his Premier League return with Tottenham Hotspur, signing a lucrative five-year contract.
The challenge at Spurs is massive for him. The Lilywhites have had a dismal campaign, but Roberto De Zerbi is the man appointed by the board to turn things around in the coming weeks. The 46-year-old has reassured our supporters he will remain at White Hart Lane for next season, no matter what.
As such, both in the length of his contract and the nature of tactical demands and his philosophy, hiring the Italian is a clear statement from the Tottenham board that he is not here just to save the club from relegation. It is now his responsibility to turn things around at N17 and get the club back to winning ways once Premier League action resumes this week.

Before taking the Tottenham job, De Zerbi was the Marseille boss. He joined Marseille as head coach in 2024 after two seasons at Brighton and Hove Albion. The Italian tightened things tactically in Marseille and guided them to Champions League football during his first season with limited resources.
Things were up and down during his second season at Orange Velodrome, and in the wake of a 5-0 thrashing by Paris Saint-Germain, De Zerbi left his role as manager of the Ligue 1 club by mutual consent in February. This ended his high-intensity, albeit volatile, stint at Marseille. The manner in which he left the French club, coupled with his outbursts and differences with the boards of the previous clubs, has made our fanbase worried that De Zerbi is the right man to save the club from relegation.
TalkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino has now given his verdict on De Zerbi taking over the reins at Spurs. He has praised the 46-year-old’s achievements at Marseille, claiming Tottenham fans will be “surprised” with their new head coach.
“I think you’ll be surprised by De Zerbi because I felt what he did at Marseille was a big achievement. He was never ever going to get close to PSG,” Tony Cascarino said on the talkSPORT show.
“It’s just a million miles away because of their revenue, the wages they can pay, uh, transfer fees. So, I’d be optimistic about you.”
All eyes on De Zerbi’s approach at Tottenham
Ideally, our fans would have loved to see any Spurs legend return to the club and save the day, or someone with the league’s firefighting experience. But the club has taken a different route with a futuristic approach by bringing in De Zerbi.
Known for a high-risk, possession-based and attacking philosophy, De Zerbi, though, may not be able to immediately implement it within the Tottenham squad. The need of the hour is to adapt his methods to suit the current situation if the ex-Marseille and Sassuolo tactician is to succeed at the North London club.
The early signs are promising as he has started overseeing training sessions at Hotspur Way from last week, looking focused and actively involved in helping players improve their performances. It reflects De Zerbi’s dedication and endeavour to turn the club’s fortunes around in the coming weeks.
