Fenerbahce had already shown interest in this Tottenham midfielder previously.
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to conduct a major overhaul of the roster when the summer transfer window comes around. And among many linked with a move away in what looks like a mass exodus in Roberto De Zerbi’s first summer at the helm at Hotspur Way, one surprise name has come up with links to Turkey.
Turkish interest in Pape Matar Sarr
Lilywhites midfielder Pape Matar Sarr has seen his future at N17 is under genuine scrutiny when summer comes around as Turkish outlet Takvim insists there is a tug-of-war among the Süper Lig giants for his signature. Fenerbahçe are reported to have restarted negotiations to sign the Senegal international, while Galatasaray are also reported to be in the frame for his signing.
This is not the first time Fenerbahçe has shown interest in Sarr. They have tried landing him before, but that came to nothing, although according to the aforementioned report, they are now pushing to take the 23-year-old to Istanbul more decisively than they did before, with talks said to be reopened for his signature.
While they have written about discussions, whether those are with the player’s representatives or with Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham (or both), is not mentioned in the report.
Sarr has had a decent season at Tottenham
Sarr has not been particularly bad for Tottenham despite their faltering season. He has been a consistent enough presence in the second phase, as he went on to register 33 appearances across all competitions this season. And in those games, he has boasted neat numbers when looking defensively. 1.5 tackles per game. 3.4 balls were recovered. 3.8 duels won. 0.8 interceptions per match. (as mentioned in the same Sport Witness report)
These numbers look like those of a player who does all the unglamorous work and is so reliable. But the question comes through on where he fits under the new manager in De Zerbi, whose system demands a very specific profile when it comes to playing in that CM role.
Sarr did pen down a contract extension at Hotspur Way back in 2024, which keeps him at the club until 2030. So Tottenham going into the summer has considerable leverage when sitting at the negotiation table.
For Tottenham, these exit links do look like there is going to not only be a mass exodus but also a complete revamp of the squad in what looks like a very important transfer window at N17.
