Wayne Rooney shares his thoughts on Tottenham’s relegation battle.

Wayne Rooney has delivered a stark warning about the consequences of Tottenham Hotspur’s potential relegation, insisting a drop to the Championship would be catastrophic for the club while also suggesting that some players may already be mentally preparing for life elsewhere if the worst happens.

The former England captain and Premier League striker was speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show following Roberto De Zerbi’s debut as Tottenham head coach, a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland that left Spurs sitting in the relegation zone after West Ham’s 4-0 victory over Wolves on Friday night compounded the misery.

Rooney acknowledged that the performance showed some improvement under De Zerbi but felt Tottenham fell short of the energy and conviction required to generate the kind of new manager bounce that might have lifted the result. Rooney said (h/t BBC):

“Sometimes you get a bounce, but I think you get that when a new manager comes in and you are front-footed and aggressive on the ball. I thought they were a bit in between.”

Tottenham showed improvement under De Zerbi

The assessment is fair. Tottenham showed genuine signs of improvement in their structure and pressing intensity, but lacked the clinical edge and decisive moments that separate performances from results. Without a win, the bounce remains more promise than reality, and De Zerbi himself will know that encouragement needs to be converted into points with considerable urgency.

“It will be a disaster for them if they do go down. I think that’s where some of those players probably are looking at it thinking if they go down they can move on and go to a different club. If they don’t get back in the Premier League in the first year, that will be an absolute nightmare for them.”

The concern about player mentality is a significant one. The Athletic’s reported list of 15 potential departures in the event of relegation underlines just how quickly the squad could be dismantled if survival is not secured, and Rooney’s suggestion that some players are already weighing their options adds a psychological dimension to an already precarious situation.

With Brighton visiting the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening, the former striker was clear about what is required.

“If they can do that then they give themselves a chance. The longer it goes without winning is difficult for them.”

Tottenham have not won a Premier League match since December. The wait must end on Saturday.
