A mass exodus of Tottenham players will happen if they get relegated at the end of the season.
Tottenham Hotspur are banking on new head coach Roberto De Zerbi to save them from relegation. But the Italian’s reign in North London did not commence well last weekend as his Spurs side were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland.
The Lilywhites still haven’t won a Premier League fixture this year, and unless they start getting points on board almost immediately, they’ll be in the second tier of English football by the end of May. Relegation will trigger a mass player exodus, and there are already some stars whose futures are up in the air.
Centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been linked with exits from N17 in recent months. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is concretely wanted by Inter Milan, and he already has a foot out of the door after reaching an agreement over personal terms with the Serie A side. And now there’s another Spurs player wanted by European clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.
Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr eyed by European giants
According to an exclusive report from CaughtOffside, Pape Matar Sarr is attracting interest from European giants Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. Tottenham are aware of the growing interest in the player, and even if they value him highly and want to keep him at the club, they’d be forced to sell if the unthinkable happens.
“Spurs insist Sarr is not for sale, but privately they know that big clubs are going to come calling, and some may already have done so,” one source told CaughtOffside.
“Sarr’s value is growing and there’s a real possibility of him moving on this summer, whether they go down or not. Real Madrid, PSG, and Bayern Munich are all big fans of the player, and offers of around £50m would probably be enough,” another added.
Pape Matar Sarr officially arrived at Spurs from FC Metz in 2022 as a prodigious talent. He has performed well and played a key role in the Lilywhites’ Europa League-winning campaign last year. The Senegalese international delivered the assist for Brennan Johnson’s winner against Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao.
Despite the combative midfielder enduring an up-and-down season, thanks largely to the chopping and changing of coaches, Sarr is wanted by some of Europe’s top clubs. He has made 138 appearances for the club to date, registering 21 goal involvements.
Aged 23, the African talent has a bright future in the game, and his suitors would back themselves to help him unlock his true potential. Contracted until 2030, Sarr is a player Spurs would be desperate to keep hold of if they manage to beat relegation. But if they don’t, then stopping Senegal’s rising star from leaving the club and joining one of Europe’s elites would become a difficult task.
