Tottenham were held to a late 2-2 draw against Brighton.

Tottenham finally ended a dismal drought that stretched out from February, against Brighton. Yet the milestone arrived wrapped in heartbreak, as Georginio Rutter’s stoppage-time equaliser denied De Zerbi’s men a crucial victory that could have provided genuine momentum in their battle for survival.

Xavi Simons delivered the performance that justified his summer arrival, combining creation and execution. His assist for Pedro Porro’s opening goal after 39 minutes suggested Tottenham might finally translate their relegation desperation into clinical finishing. When Simons himself struck brilliantly in the 77th minute to restore Spurs’ advantage at 2-1, the stadium erupted, and fans felt that this might be the turning point the team needed. However, it was not so.

Kaoru Mitoma’s first-half stoppage-time volley had cancelled Porro’s opener, dragging the match level after an initially positive start. That response should have stung Tottenham, but Simons’ intervention suggested they possessed resilience and attacking thrust missing for months. De Zerbi watched his first game at his former club’s stadium unfold with promise after eight consecutive league matches producing single-goal outputs or blanks.

The only positive was they ended a drought that began in February, where they had just scored 1 goal or less in the PL. A stretch of 8 consecutive games.

Can Tottenham turn things around?

Spurs remain 18th in the table, one point from the teams directly above them West Ham and Nottingham Forest. De Zerbi’s debut, however energising Simons’ display and however close Tottenham came to victory, changed nothing about their precarious standing with five matches remaining. The scoring drought ended. The suffering continued.

De Zerbi faces the task of translating individual brilliance into collective points. Saturday proved Tottenham can score multiple goals. The question now becomes whether they can do so whilst keeping shut doors. Brighton showed exactly how perilous one lapse remains.
