Newly-promoted Premier League club Coventry City are planning to raid Tottenham for star midfielder.
Tottenham Hotspur are set for a radical change once the current season ends, regardless of their status.
The North London outfit sit two points adrift of safety with just four games remaining this season, having defeated Wolves 1-0 this past weekend to claim their first three points of 2026, and their first win under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi in the process. But with their Premier League status still uncertain, several clubs are paying close attention to the ongoing situation and targeting their players.
Aston Villa and Chelsea are interested in signing Lucas Bergvall, while Archie Gray is being monitored by some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Newly-promoted Coventry City have reportedly set their sights on midfielder Conor Gallagher, who hasn’t pulled up trees at Tottenham since joining from Atletico Madrid in the winter transfer window.
Now, another Tottenham midfielder has emerged on the radar of the current Championship title winners.
Coventry City eye move for James Maddison
According to transfer expert Mick Brown, Coventry City are plotting a sensational move to bring back James Maddison to the CBS Arena if he is allowed to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
James Maddison ruptured his ACL in a friendly against Newcastle United at the start of August 2025 and has subsequently spent more than eight months on the sidelines. He has been working hard in his rehab to attain fitness and provide some help to his Spurs side, struggling to stay in the top flight. Despite not being fit to play, De Zerbi has included the creative midfielder on the bench in the last two games against Brighton and Wolves.
The exact timeframe for Maddison’s return to action remain ambiguous at the moment, but that hasn’t stopped Coventry City from preparing a summer swoop for their former playmaker.
“James Maddison to Coventry City has got legs,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“He’s made no secret about the fact he’s a fan of the club, he came through the ranks there, so it’s a deal that could pull at his heartstrings.
“First things first, he has to get his fitness back, and that will be his priority. Once he does that, then a decision can be made about his future. If Tottenham go down, he might not be interested in playing in the Championship.
“Coventry could take that opportunity to bring him back to the Premier League, I think they’re more likely to take that gamble than anybody else would be.
“It’s going to be a concern for a few clubs, he has to prove his fitness and that he can stay playing at the top level, because it can take a while to recover. But Coventry would be able to give him the time and be patient with him, and it’s an environment where he would feel comfortable.
“So, like I say, he will have to prove he can get over the knee problem, but if he can be ready for pre-season, a move to Coventry would make a lot of sense.”
James Maddison could be key for Tottenham in relegation battle
De Zerbi rates Maddison highly, and his inclusion in the squad for the past two games was a ‘symbolic’ gesture by the Tottenham boss to demonstrate ‘good times’ are returning. Indeed, Spurs have picked up four points from the fixtures against Brighton and Wolves, even though Maddison did not play any part in it.
This shows how much De Zerbi values Maddison’s leadership skills off the pitch, and with Xavi Simons now ruled out for the long term following an ACL injury sustained at Wolves last weekend, the England international would be raring to make his mark when he gets the green signal to feature again.
With four games remaining, a fit, hungry and motivated Maddison returning from an ACL injury could become the Lilywhites’ difference-maker in their survival bid.
