Xavi Simons suffered a devastating ACL injury in Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win over Wolves.
Xavi Simons had produced his best performance in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt in the 2-2 draw with Brighton, creating Pedro Porro’s goal and scoring a worldie, and the creative midfielder looked set to play a key role in his team’s quest to stay up. However, he picked up a serious knee injury in the 1-0 win over Wolves last weekend.
The Dutchman jarred his knee on the turf while competing for the ball against Wolves left-back Hugo Bueno. Xavi Simons fell on the floor, grimacing with pain, before being stretchered off the pitch. The worst fears of Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham fans came true when it was revealed that Simons has suffered an ACL injury and will no longer take part for the rest of the season.
A ruptured ACL means the 23-year-old will not only miss the remaining four games of the campaign and the summer’s World Cup, but also the first half of next season, with the playmaker not expected to be back in action until 2027.
Xavi Simons shares pictures of himself hitting the gym after ACL injury
Tottenham’s victory at Molineux came at a high cost, with De Zerbi losing Simons for the rest of the year following a torn ACL. On Wednesday, the creative midfielder shared an update on his rehabilitation after confirming he will undergo surgery in the coming weeks.
Spurs’ No.7 has surprisingly shared pictures of himself working out in the gym as he begins his long road to recovery. Simons shared the photo on Snapchat with the caption: “No matter what!” (h/t Football London)
It is strange to see a player in the gym just days after suffering such a serious knee injury. Seeing Simons share a picture of himself in the gym is a bit of a head-scratcher, but fans must take into account that he is unlikely to do anything against the orders of the physios and doctors.
Having lost both creative players in Simons and Mohammed Kudus to long-term injuries, De Zerbi has to devise a plan to address his team’s lack of spark in the final third. Despite not being fit enough to return to action, James Maddison has been named on the bench for Tottenham’s last two Premier League matches by De Zerbi. The Spurs tactician will be hopeful that Maddison gets back to fitness in the final weeks of the season and replaces Simons as the team’s creator-in-chief.
