Tottenham will be keen to continue their winning momentum against Aston Villa.
All tactical plans and detailed instructions become secondary now as Tottenham fight to maintain their winning momentum in the Premier League. At this stage, it matters little how they secure three points in their upcoming clash against Aston Villa. The priority is simply to claim victory and move one step closer to survival as they remain locked in a relegation battle with West Ham United during the decisive phase of the season.
The Lilywhites were unfortunate not to come away with all three points during Brighton’s visit to N17 a couple of weeks ago. They conceded a last-minute equaliser after Kevin Danso failed to clear the ball from inside the six-yard box, allowing Georginio Rutter the simplest of tap-ins to break Spurs hearts. However, credit must be given where it is due, as the North Londoners responded the following week impressively by securing a hard-fought 1-0 away victory against Wolves.
The responsibility now falls on Roberto de Zerbi and his players to build on that positive momentum and deliver another strong result when Spurs travel to Villa Park on Sunday. It is a must-win encounter for the Lilywhites, and they simply cannot afford to drop points at this stage of the campaign. A victory could help the North Londoners climb out of the relegation zone, provided West Ham also drop points in their away fixture against Brentford this weekend.
Tottenham to drop points against Aston Villa this weekend?
It is time for Tottenham’s hopes to be realised as they fight to preserve their Premier League status this season. The Lilywhites have entered must-win territory and head to Villa Park knowing they need all three points to keep pace with West Ham in the ongoing relegation battle. Beating Unai Emery’s men will be no easy feat, as Aston Villa are pushing to secure Champions League football for next season.
Chris Sutton believes Tottenham will fall short against Aston Villa when the Lilywhites travel to Villa Park on Sunday. Writing for the BBC, Sutton said,
“Tottenham probably need to win three of their last four games to stay up but, although they finally won in 2026 when they beat Wolves last week, I am not sure it has given them any momentum. It was a huge result for Roberto de Zerbi’s side, but you have to remember Wolves are woeful and Spurs also made hard work of their victory.”
The pundit added,
“What helps Spurs here is that Villa have their Europa League semi-final against Nottingham Forest to contend with over the next few days. Even so, I still feel like Villa will be too good. This defeat will send Spurs one step closer to the drop, and a trip to play my old club Lincoln in the Championship next season. 2-0 Villa.”
Chris Sutton points out that Tottenham laboured in their victory against Wolves last weekend and did not display enough encouraging signs to suggest they are ready to challenge Aston Villa away from home. As the pundit rightly notes, the one factor working in favour of the Lilywhites is Villa’s upcoming Europa League semi-final, which could force Unai Emery to rotate his squad on Sunday. Even so, Sutton remains convinced that Spurs will come up short against the Villains, further deepening their troubles in the relegation zone.
Tottenham have struggled against Aston Villa in recent seasons, with the Lilywhites losing three of their last four matches at Villa Park. Unai Emery’s side have already emerged victorious in the previous two meetings this season, winning both matches 2-1 at N17. To make matters worse, Roberto de Zerbi also holds an underwhelming record against the West Midlands club, losing three of the four matches he has managed against them. As things stand, the signs strongly favour Villa taking all three points against the Lilywhites.
