Aston Villa vs. Tottenham: Match Preview, Team News, Lineup and Prediction as Spurs look to build on from Wolves win

Tottenham are coming off a 1-0 win over Wolves.

Tottenham Hotspur continue their push for survival in the English top tier, which takes them to Villa Park this Sunday as Roberto De Zerbi & Co. go into the final four games that can end up defining this and next season at Hotspur Way.

The North Londoners are still trailing by a couple of points to West Ham in 17th position, and Spurs do so with what looks like a growing list of players on the treatment table after Tottenham’s last weekend’s narrow 1-0 win against Wolves.

That win at Molineux Stadium was the first that Tottenham won in the Premier League since December. It was an end of an 118-day run without a league win, but despite that win, the results elsewhere meant that Tottenham continued their position in the relegation zone.

West Ham kept it late, but Callum Wilson (who fired a warning at Tottenham) scored the winner against Everton, which kept Tottenham rooted at 18th on 34 points.

Spurs are not the only ones facing a difficult run in the business end of the campaign. Aston Villa come into this game on the back of difficult form of their own. Unai Emery & Co. have seen back-to-back 1-0 defeats (first to Fulham in the Premier League when Ryan Sessegnon’s goal was enough for Marco Silva’s side to take three points and then to Tottenham’s relegation rival Nottingham Forest, who got a crucial goal from Chris Wood’s penalty in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final first).

But while that Europa League trail will shift the focus, the Villans will need to keep focus, as they have a Champions League place to qualify for, and they cannot let focus run amok going into these final games of the season.

Team News

Aston Villa

Villa midfielder Amadou Onana came out limping in the second half of their game at the City Ground with what looked like a hamstring problem, and he will likely serve time on the sidelines for this weekend. His midfield partner Boubacar Kamara is the only other confirmed absentee for Emery.

Man City academy graduate Jadon Sancho is expected to continue in the attacking midfield role with Morgan Rogers, who has had a quiet run of late, but he will want to push himself to prove his credentials as he looks to make the Three Lions squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Tottenham

The Wolves’ win came at a high cost as Dominic Solanke and Xavi Simons picked up injuries that are set to keep them out of the sidelines for the rest of the season.

The pair will join what is already a substantial list of absentees at Hotspur Way with all of Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert. Pape Matar Sarr, Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario are doubts for Roberto De Zerbi going into the game.

James Maddison has been in the squad lately; hopefully, he gets a sub run in this weekend.

Predicted Lineup

ASTON VILLA: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Tielemans, Luiz; Rogers, McGinn, Sancho; Watkins

TOTTENHAM: Kinsky; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Spence; Bissouma, Bentancur, Gallagher; Kolo Muani, Richarlison, Tel.

Prediction

Tottenham have not won the last four times they faced Villa. They have won only once in the last nine times they faced the Villans, which was a 4-1 thrashing at home back in November 2024.

And on top of that record you are also losing someone like Simons, who was the creative hub of De Zerbi’s early setup, and there is no obvious replacement in the squad who gives you that kind of penetration between the lines.

Mathys Tel carries the most threat in the final third now and will need to have a significant influence.

While we saw some real improvement from Tottenham in recent weeks, going away at Villa and churning out a result is quite difficult.

My (TTLB) Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham.
