Tottenham fans are seeing the best of their forward this season.
Tottenham have endured more lows than highs as the club continues to fight hard to avoid relegation this season. Most of the key players have failed to step up when it has mattered most, placing their immediate futures at N17 in serious doubt. There has been a noticeable lack of effort from much of the squad, and it can be argued that they have not shown enough desire to fight for the badge. However, these criticisms do not apply to Richarlison, who has consistently shown fight and determination for the North Londoners throughout the campaign.
The Brazilian international was close to leaving the club last summer after falling down the pecking order at N17. However, Thomas Frank’s decision to retain the 29-year-old and place his trust in him convinced Richarlison to stay at Hotspur Way for the current campaign and compete for a place in the starting eleven alongside Dominic Solanke and Randal Kolo Muani. He made an immediate statement at the start of the season, scoring an impressive brace against Burnley on the opening day.
It is fair to say that the former Everton forward has not looked back since. He has remained available for most of the campaign during what has been a challenging period for the Lilywhites in terms of injuries. In addition, Richarlison has rediscovered his goal-scoring form for Spurs, particularly in Dominic Solanke’s absence. He has led the line effectively under different managers and has not allowed the club’s poor Premier League form to affect his performances.
Richarlison has stepped up for Tottenham this season
Tottenham fans have taken encouragement from Richarlison’s performances in what has otherwise been a difficult season for the club. The prolific centre-forward has contributed crucial goals, including a brave header that secured all three points against Aston Villa last weekend. The Brazil international possesses the right mentality and thrives in a relegation battle, which aligns perfectly with what Roberto de Zerbi demands from his players during this critical phase of the season.
Paul O’Keefe now believes that the 29-year-old has arguably been Spurs’ most important player this season as they continue their fight for survival. Taking to X, O’Keefe said,
“29 apps, 17 starts. 10 goals and 4 assists (Premier League). I mean we have to accept that this season has pretty much been a washout but Richarlison’s actually done his bit. Not many can claim that. It’s a great shout because it’s not an obvious one either.”
As O’Keefe highlights, the statistics underline Richarlison’s importance to Tottenham this season. He has scored ten goals and provided four assists in just 17 Premier League starts, making him a key figure in the final third for the Lilywhites. The forward has played an important role in the club’s fight against relegation, demonstrating the hunger and mentality needed to help turn their fortunes around at N17. Moreover, the Brazil international has operated in multiple positions across the attacking line, aiding the integration of other players into the starting eleven under three different managers.
The equation is simple. If Spurs are to avoid relegation, they must continue to rely on Richarlison in the upcoming matches. The in-form striker has valuable experience of battling relegation from his time at Everton. Therefore, it is crucial that Roberto de Zerbi continues to back the prolific forward to lead the line as the Lilywhites aim to maintain their momentum in the Premier League. Next up for the North Londoners is a home clash against Leeds United, where Richarlison will look to add to his goal tally in what is set to be a must-win encounter for the club.
