Roberto De Zerbi has shared updates about James Maddison and Dominic Solanke.
Roberto De Zerbi has offered a revealing and genuinely enthusiastic update on James Maddison’s recovery, describing the Tottenham playmaker in glowing terms while acknowledging that the Premier League’s intensity may still pose a challenge for a player returning from such a lengthy absence.
Maddison has been sidelined since suffering a ruptured ACL during pre-season under Thomas Frank, missing the entire campaign in what has been one of the most painful individual stories of an already painful season for the club. His impending return has generated growing excitement, and De Zerbi’s words suggest the Italian has been watching training with a level of admiration that bodes well for how central Maddison will be to his plans once fully fit.
De Zerbi stated (h/t Football London):
“I’m thinking about James Maddison because I’m watching a top, top player. Maybe he’s not ready yet to play, but as a physical condition, not for the rhythm, for the intensity of the game. We are playing in the Premier League, the most difficult league in terms of intensity and rhythm. But as a player, it’s great, as a coach, watching one player like this.”
What followed was perhaps the most illuminating part of De Zerbi’s update, offering a window into how the Italian thinks about footballers and why Maddison fits his vision so naturally. “Especially for me, because I was number 10. And I’m sensitive in number 10 players like Xavi Simons, Maddison, Kulusevski, and Kudus. We have a lot of number 10, but I want to see.”
The personal connection De Zerbi draws between his own playing background as a number ten and his appreciation for players in that mould is significant. Maddison, Simons, Kulusevski, and Kudus represent an extraordinary collection of creative talent, and the idea of De Zerbi orchestrating all of them in a fully fit, fully functional Tottenham side is one of the more tantalising prospects the club has offered supporters in some time. Whether that vision is realised in the Premier League or the Championship remains the defining question of the next three weeks.
Tottenham fitness update: De Zerbi is cautious about Solanke
On Dominic Solanke, De Zerbi was cautiously optimistic. The striker has been working his way back from injury, and the manager suggested he is improving quickly, though his availability for Sunday’s trip to Villa Park remains uncertain. The more realistic target for Solanke’s return appears to be the Chelsea fixture at Stamford Bridge, which De Zerbi referenced directly as the game he hopes the striker can be available for.
“About Solanke, he’s improving very quickly. I don’t know, for this game, I don’t know if he can be available. We hope for the next game in Stamford Bridge.”
Losing Solanke for Villa Park is a blow given his importance to De Zerbi’s attacking structure, but the prospect of having both him and Maddison available for the final run-in offers a genuine reason for optimism in what has otherwise been a season almost entirely devoid of it.
