Tottenham are hoping to sign the summer loanee on a permanent deal in the summer.
Tottenham midfielder Joao Palhinha has been in exceptional form for the club ever since Roberto de Zerbi took over the reins at N17. The Portuguese international has revitalised his career in recent weeks, playing an important role in midfield for the Lilywhites during their impressive run in the Premier League. He has formed a solid partnership with Rodrigo Bentancur and Conor Gallagher, with all three midfielders working tirelessly on and off the ball for the North London club.
A lot of eyebrows were raised when Spurs signed Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich on a season-long loan last summer. He arrived as Yves Bissouma’s replacement, with the club needing someone capable of offering protection to the backline this season. To his credit, the 30-year-old remained committed to his responsibilities and was one of the standout performers for the Lilywhites during the first half of the campaign.
Palhinha has consistently shown that form is temporary, but class is permanent. The Portuguese international played a vital role in helping the Lilywhites secure their first win of the calendar year earlier last month when Roberto de Zerbi’s men defeated Wolves away from home. His second-half winner was enough to seal all three points and boost Spurs in their battle against relegation. The 30-year-old then carried that momentum into the clash against Aston Villa, helping the North Londoners secure back-to-back victories.
Joao Palhinha has stood out for Tottenham
In a season where very little has gone right for Tottenham, a few players have still managed to step up for the club under various managers. Joao Palhinha is one of those players who has proved his worth at N17 and shown that he still deserves to perform on the biggest stages. His impressive display against Aston Villa last weekend even prompted Roberto de Zerbi to admit that he wants the Portuguese international to remain at N17 beyond this season by signing a contract extension.
Now, Mitch Fretton has also been impressed with the way the 30-year-old has revived his career at N17 in recent weeks by working hard to fight for his place in the starting eleven. Taking to X, Fretton said,
“If you’d have asked me a few months ago, I would’ve said signing Palhinha permanently is a big no. But since De Zerbi’s come in he’s been fantastic, love his passion for the club as well.”
As Fretton rightly points out, signing Joao Palhinha on a permanent deal would have made little sense a few months ago due to his dismal form and inconsistency in midfield for the Lilywhites. However, the Portuguese international has started playing with far more authority ever since Roberto de Zerbi arrived at the club. Palhinha has reclaimed his place in the starting eleven in recent matches. He is also a leader in the dressing room, and the fans can clearly see that the 30-year-old has a deep passion for the club. As De Zerbi rightly admits, the North Londoners need characters like this in the dressing room to keep the players motivated during difficult moments.
From a financial perspective, it makes little sense to sign Palhinha on a permanent deal in the summer. The prolific midfielder offers little resale value and is arguably past his peak. However, football often runs on emotion, and it would only be fair for Spurs to offer him a contract extension because the Portuguese international clearly cares deeply about the club and can still provide valuable guidance and experience in the dressing room. Recent reports have also suggested that the North Londoners are keen to renegotiate a new fee to sign the 30-year-old on a permanent deal in the coming months.
