Tottenham might undergo a major revamp should they stay in the Premier League.
Tottenham are said to be expecting a major squad overhaul when the summer window comes around, with the Lilywhites likely bringing in players that would suit Roberto De Zerbi’s playing style.
And from his time at Brighton, we know how he likes the full-backs to be potent on the offensive side of the game while bringing that sense of presence defensively.
Tottenham explore talks but Atletico lead
This is where Tottenham links to bring Sporting Lisbon left-back Maxi Araujo makes sense. The Lilywhites have been looking at prospects to land him for a while, and it looks like the chiefs at Hotspur Way are finally ready to act on their interest as Spurs hold exploratory talks with his agents ahead of the upcoming transfer window. Araujo has been attracting a lot of interest after his outstanding performances in the Champions League this season. And this is where interests from Chelsea and Manchester United also come into picture. The aforementioned report states that both of Tottenham’s English top-tier rivals have also explored talks with Araujo’s representatives.
But that being said, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are said to be leading the race for his signing, with Diego Simeone tagging him as a priority target going into the off-season.
Sporting will not be pressured into Maxi Araujo sale
Sporting Lisbon signed him for €13.7m back in 2024 but are looking at his €80m release clause as a baseline figure to sanction his sale. Any sale at the aforementioned price will see the Portuguese giants make an extraordinary return on investment on his sale.
That being said, the report does state that they would prefer to keep him at Jose Alvalade Stadium, but given the intensity of interest and the size of clubs that are interested in him, there is already a sense of acceptance internally; his sale is likely.
But Sporting CB has historically been a difficult team to negotiate with for their prized assets. Ask Manchester United what they had to go through to sign Bruno Fernandes or ask Arsenal about their Viktor Gyökeres pursuit.
Sporting CB has that capacity to wait and let the market find the pricing ceiling before sanctioning a sale.
For Tottenham specifically, a lot of pursuit of Maxi’s signing depends on what happens against Leeds tonight. But any move for him will likely result in Udogie’s sale.
Do you think Tottenham can sign Maxi from under Atleti’s noses?
