Tottenham skipper Cristian Romero suffered a knee injury in April that ruled him out of the remainder of the campaign.
Cristian Romero was in tears when he went off injured at the Stadium of Light on April 12, as Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland.
It emerged at the time that the Spurs skipper could spend five to eight weeks on the sidelines after scans showed ligament damage. Fortunately, he avoided surgery on his knee, which would have ended his dream to represent his nation at the World Cup. However, it became very clear that Cristian Romero would miss the remainder of the season, putting a dent in Spurs’ survival hopes.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that the 27-year-old has made it to the Argentina preliminary squad for the World Cup 2026. Widely regarded as a guaranteed starter for Argentina, Romero was crucial in their nation’s last World Cup triumph in 2022, forming a solid pair with veteran Nicolas Otamendi at the heart of their defence.
The Tottenham star’s selection in the preliminary squad was a clear indication that manager Lionel Scaloni, his coaching staff and Argentina’s medical team are confident that he will recover fully before the glitz and glamour tournament starts on June 12. And now there’s been another update on Romero’s fitness.

Romero had initially planned to travel to his homeland to continue his rehabilitation at the national team training centre in Ezeiza. Due to Tottenham’s relegation battle, he has instead decided to stay close to his teammates and carry on his rehab.

Now, according to Argentine outlet Diario Cronica, Argentina’s medical staff have respected their star defender’s decision to stay back in North London by sending kinesiologist Luis García to England to help him recover quickly. There are positive developments surrounding the 27-year-old’s fitness, with Romero now out of the knee brace.
This shows signs of progress in Romero’s recovery from a knee injury. De Zerbi’s side could have done with having their skipper, leader and seasoned campaigner for the crucial final two games, but it is very unlikely to see him back before the campaign. While he hasn’t been reliable with his ill-discipline and moments of madness, the Argentine still remains Tottenham’s best defender and a match-winner on his day. So, Spurs are definitely hurting with his absence.
As far as Argentina and their fans are concerned, they’d be delighted to see Romero out of the knee brace and taking part in more active rehab exercises. Everything at the moment is being designed around getting him fit for the friendlies against Honduras and Iceland next month to get some match fitness heading into the major tournament.
