The loanee has emerged as an important player for Tottenham in their quest for top-flight survival in recent weeks.

There has been uncertainty over whether the Lilywhites would activate the option to buy Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich this summer. The Portuguese international has produced some strong displays over recent weeks amid Spurs’ turnaround in fortunes under De Zerbi, most notably scoring the winner against Wolves at Molineux. He also battled hard in midfield throughout the 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Leeds United, earning a 6/10 rating.
Tottenham make decision on Joao Palhinha’s future
However, according to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Tottenham will turn towards other central midfield targets if they fail to agree on a permanent deal with Palhinha. They are working to assess their options in the event the 30-year-old doesn’t stay beyond this campaign, with the N17 chiefs adamant that they want to add at least one new centre-midfielder to their squad.
The midfield targets will be dependent on the North London club’s position at the end of May, but there is no second thought that the recruitment team is keen to add numbers to this specific area of the pitch before the 2026/27 campaign commences. Recent reports suggested that Palhinha would like to stay in N17 even if the club goes down. That was followed by Sporting CP expressing interest in re-signing the defensive midfielder, and interestingly, he would be open to returning due to personal reasons.
Well, two things cannot be right at the same time in this situation. This would leave Tottenham in confusion and disrupt their planning for the next season. If Sporting CP’s interest is indeed true, the Hotspur Way bosses will have to wait before proceeding towards a permanent deal for the player.
Bayern Munich are desperate to offload Palhinha off their books completely, which opens the door for Spurs to negotiate a lower fee than their initial £25million purchase option. However, at this moment, the experienced, battle-hardened midfielder’s wishes are set to dictate whether he wants to wear Sporting’s colours again or continue at White Hart Lane regardless of the club’s outcome later this month.
