Tottenham must find a quality replacement for wantaway goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Tottenham Hotspur have some key decisions to make when they rebuild the squad in the summer. One of those will be the goalkeeping situation, with Guglielmo Vicario expected to depart.

Inter Milan has already reached an outline agreement on personal terms with Vicario. The Serie A side have been confident of signing the 29-year-old for a paltry €18m this summer. He now looks set to return to his homeland, as Inter must now reach an agreement with Tottenham for the shot-stopper’s transfer.

Vicario arrived from Empoli in the summer of 2023 as a highly-rated goalkeeper with good distribution skills and command in the box. However, the Italian has failed to show his full potential in North London across three seasons, making several high-profile errors. Now that he is intent on leaving the club and joining Inter, the Tottenham officials face the task of replacing him with a quality goalkeeper.

Tottenham executives put on red alert by Napoli goalkeeper’s potential availability

According to a report from AreaNapoli, Alex Meret could leave Napoli in the summer after growing frustrated with his lack of opportunities this season. Tottenham could enter the picture for the Italian goalkeeper, with the club’s executives put on red alert by his potential availability. They would not mind having another Italian in goal, despite Vicario’s underwhelming displays.

Alex Meret has been a two-time Serie A winner with Napoli. The 29-year-old is an experienced goalkeeper but, like Vicario, has weaknesses in ball distribution and command of the box. And following a few high-profile mistakes, he has lost his place in the XI to Vanja Milinkovic-Savic this season.

Since Spurs are planning to reshape their squad, it would make sense to consider younger profiles than Meret. Manchester City’s James Trafford would be a safe bet, thanks to his Premier League experience, adaptability, ball-playing ability and leadership.

Trafford has been heavily linked with an exit from Manchester City ever since Gianluigi Donnarumma arrived in the latter stages of last summer’s transfer window. And Tottenham could tempt the Englishman by giving him the chance to establish himself as a No.1. At 23, the Man City man can easily prove to be an upgrade on Vicario and become our club’s goalkeeper for the best part of the decade.
