Tottenham wonderkid has earned his senior Ireland call-up before making his Tottenham debut.
Mason Melia is set to receive his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad this month, according to Football London. Head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson confirmed that the 18-year-old will be named in the squad for friendlies against Qatar on May 28 and Canada on June 5, in a remarkable milestone for a player yet to make his Tottenham debut.
The achievement is all the more extraordinary given the circumstances surrounding Melia’s arrival at Hotspur Way. The teenager joined from St Patrick’s Athletic in January in a deal worth an initial £1.6 million, a record transfer fee for the League of Ireland, with add-ons that could double the total value. Tottenham moved quickly to fend off significant interest from other Premier League and European clubs, handing Melia a long-term contract until 2031 that underlined how seriously the club views his long-term potential.
Melia’s progress was delayed due to a back injury
His path to a first-team debut has been delayed by a back problem suffered shortly after his arrival, followed by a chest infection, pushing back his Under-21 debut until last month. Despite those setbacks, he has already caught the attention of Roberto De Zerbi, training with the first team on occasions and scoring goals at Under-21 level since returning to fitness.
Hallgrimsson was candid about his assessment process. “Mason is in the next camp. I have to be honest, I haven’t seen him play for Tottenham’s U21s in their last games, but our U21s manager Jim Crawford has.” The fact that Crawford’s recommendation was sufficient to earn Melia a senior call-up without Hallgrimsson having seen him recently speaks volumes about the impression the teenager has made within the Irish football system.
Melia arrives in the senior environment with significant experience already behind him, having made 98 senior appearances for St Patrick’s Athletic with 25 goals and eight assists before turning 18.
