West Ham’s Callum Wilson had fired a warning to Tottenham amid relegation battle.
West Ham United forward Callum Wilson had made clear that Tottenham‘s failure to beat Leeds United has kept the relegation battle very much alive, insisting the Hammers will be doing everything in their power to capitalise on Spurs’ dropped points when they travel to Newcastle this weekend.
Wilson’s comments, shared by journalist Chris Cowlin on X, reflected a West Ham dressing room that has refused to accept relegation despite sitting two points behind Tottenham with two games remaining.
The draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night, where Mathys Tel’s penalty concession allowed Leeds to equalise, had given the Hammers exactly the lifeline they needed heading into their penultimate fixture. Wilson said:
“Ultimately Tottenham’s result against Leeds still leaves things quite open, so we have to go to Newcastle and try and get a result there. All you can do is take care of your own house and keep that in order, basically. If we get a result it puts pressure on Tottenham and then you get another result against Leeds and see where you end up.”
The message was straightforward and delivered without any attempt to dress it up. West Ham knew exactly what they needed, a win at St James’ Park, and follow it up with a victory against Leeds on the final day, and they were clearly determined to pursue that scenario with everything they have remaining.
The scenario Wilson described was the one that would have made Tuesday’s trip to Chelsea so significant for Tottenham. If West Ham had beaten Newcastle, Spurs would have dropped into the relegation zone ahead of the Chelsea fixture, turning what was already a massive game into an absolute must-not-lose situation. But none of that happened, as West Ham lost 3-1 to Newcastle, sinking further. One point for Tottenham would not guarantee safety.
