John Wenham prefers Dougie Freedman to ‘this’ Dortmund star for Tottenham’s sporting director role.
Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new sporting director has taken an interesting turn, with analyst John Wenham arguing that Dougie Freedman represents a considerably more sensible appointment than Sebastian Kehl, the former Borussia Dortmund sporting director who has been strongly linked with a role at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Kehl became a free agent after leaving Dortmund by mutual consent and has been touted as a potential successor to Fabio Paratici, who departed in February. The German’s connections to the Bundesliga and his knowledge of that market had made him an attractive candidate on paper, with the potential Karim Adeyemi link adding a practical dimension to his appointment. However, Wenham has raised significant doubts about both his record and his suitability for the Premier League environment.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said:
“By all accounts, his record is pretty underwhelming. It seems like a risk to me. I’d rather bring in somebody who has experience of working within the Premier League before, or playing in the Premier League, rather than another outsider who played in the Bundesliga. We operate in a very different market here, and unfortunately, players from the German League, as we’ve seen ourselves this year with Xavi Simons, take time to establish themselves in this league.”
Wenham acknowledged the counterargument, noting that Dimitar Berbatov and Heung-Min Son both arrived from the Bundesliga and became outstanding Tottenham players. But his broader concern about Kehl relates to more than just market knowledge. Reports suggest Kehl did not work effectively alongside his superior Lars Ricken at Dortmund, a dynamic that raises questions about how he would function alongside Johan Lange should the current sporting director remain at the club.
Freedman the better option?
His alternative candidate is Freedman, whose record at Crystal Palace speaks for itself. The signings of Adam Wharton, Eberechi Eze, Mark Guehi, and Michael Olise represent exactly the kind of astute, high-value recruitment that Tottenham have failed to consistently deliver in recent years. Each of those players arrived without enormous fanfare and developed into genuine Premier League quality, with several subsequently attracting interest from elite clubs. Wenham concluded:
“I think Dougie Freedman, the chap that was at Palace and is now in the Middle East, that would be a much, much better move for Tottenham than Sebastian Kehl.”
For a club preparing one of the most significant rebuilds in their recent history, getting the sporting director appointment right is as important as any transfer. Wenham’s case for Freedman over Kehl is coherent, grounded in evidence and deserves serious consideration from those making the decision.
