Micky van de Ven’s future at Tottenham has been up in the air for several months now.
Micky van de Ven, described as the best Premier League defender recently by Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi, is understood to be unhappy at Tottenham following another season of bottom-end Premier League survival battle and is pushing for a move away.
Several clubs across Europe have been vying for the Tottenham star’s signature. Micky van de Ven has been linked with moves to Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool, among others, but remains contracted to White Hart Lane until 2029. This strengthens the Lilywhites’ negotiating position significantly. The centre-back is viewed as a pivotal figure in Tottenham’s long-term plans, and their stance remains firm.
Liverpool are the club to have upped their ante in the pursuit of the 25-year-old. The Merseysiders view Van de Ven as a potential replacement for their star skipper Virgil van Dijk, who is 34 and well past his prime. And the Arne Slot-managed club have now received a boost in their pursuit of the Tottenham defender.
Ben Jacobs provides the latest update on Micky van de Ven’s future amid Liverpool interest
According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, Van de Ven would be ready to join Liverpool in the summer if they firmly enter the transfer race. Should Spurs beat the drop, he expects the central defender to pen fresh terms. The Dutchman has been enjoying playing under Roberto De Zerbi, but he’d push for a move away from N17 if the Lilywhites go down.
“If Tottenham stay up, I think Micky van de Ven will likely sign a new deal,” Ben Jacobs said on The United Stand.
“I have said before on the show that if Liverpool enters that race, Van de Ven would want to join Liverpool, but they haven’t entered that race.
“So, let’s kind of be a bit patient on that one because Van de Ven is only focused on trying to keep Tottenham up at this stage.
“From what I gather, he really enjoys playing under Roberto De Zerbi, but he’s not necessarily the kind of player that wants to drop into the Championship, even if he likes the manager.”
For Tottenham, the prospect of losing their best defender, either cheaply through relegation or at any price to a rival, would represent yet another body blow to their hopes of building the squad. Spurs fans would take something positive from Jacobs’ revelation about the Dutchman enjoying playing under De Zerbi and the chances of him staying if the club retains top-flight status.
