Tottenham re-open talks with Premier League giants for a player they missed out on signing in 2025.
Tottenham Hotspur were desperate for wide players last summer, especially after the great Son Heung-min’s departure. The North Londoners suffered several blows in pursuit of several targets to address their problems out wide.
Spurs were in talks with Crystal Palace over the signing of Eberechi Eze, but a delay to agree on a fee led to arch-rivals Arsenal swooping in and snatching the player under their noses. And Eze went on to play a key role in Arsenal’s title triumph after 22 long years. Another player they missed out on signing was Manchester City’s Savinho.
The Lilywhites notably made several attempts to sign Savinho from Manchester City last summer. The 22-year-old had agreed personal terms with Tottenham, which was a clear signal that he wanted to join their squad. However, Pep Guardiola blocked the Brazilian’s exit as he was against weakening his squad depth. Eventually, he stayed at the Etihad Stadium and penned a new deal.
However, Savinho had a season to forget as he missed a huge chunk of the campaign through injury. The young winger started just seven times as a result, scoring once and assisting as many times in the Premier League. The signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth in the January transfer window further pushed him down the pecking order, but after boss Pep Guardiola bid farewell to Man City on Sunday, there could be an opportunity for Savinho to follow suit.
Tottenham revive interest in Savinho
According to transfer news king Fabrizio Romano on X, Tottenham are back in the frame for Savinho after narrowly beating the drop. They have reopened talks with Man City for the Brazilian international, as Roberto De Zerbi looks to reshape his squad as per his vision and image.
Savinho himself is “open” to the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he looks to get regular game time. However, Romano adds Newcastle United are monitoring the player and could provide Spurs competition for his signature.
After beating Everton 1-0 at home and securing top-flight safety on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign, the North Londoners are starting their squad overhaul early. De Zerbi has kept his promise, but if Spurs are to get back to fighting for Europe next term, they need reinforcements in several areas of the pitch.
A wide attacker is a must following Wilson Odobert’s ACL injury and Mathys Tel’s inconsistent form throughout the past campaign. Savinho, in that regard, would be ideal. At 22, Savinho wouldn’t just be a long-term signing as he’s more than capable of making an immediate impact at White Hart Lane. The South American trickster can operate on both wings and as a No.10, and De Zerbi will benefit from having such a tactically sound player in his squad.
Recent reports suggested City are prepared to discuss offers between £42m and £50m for the Brazilian international. Now that initial discussions are underway, it’d be fascinating to see if our Hotspur Way chiefs can negotiate that valuation down and sign Savinho for a reasonable price.
