The Italian tactician helped the North Londoners avoid the humiliation of relegation to the Championship by the skin of their teeth, securing a 1-0 victory over Everton on Sunday. West Ham’s best efforts with their own 3-0 win against Leeds United eventually went in vain as they became the final team to drop into the Championship.
Massive credit to Roberto De Zerbi for turning Tottenham’s fortunes around in less than two months. Before his arrival, Spurs were only heading in one direction under former interim boss Igor Tudor, who had only managed a draw during his short tenure before he was shown the door.
With Tottenham winless in the Premier League in 2026, De Zerbi took over the club’s reins. After a 15-match winless league run ended at Wolves, the Italian boss’ final act on Sunday was to inspire the Lilywhites to a first home victory in the Premier League since the first week of December in front of emotionally driven Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful. By doing so, Spurs finished the season in 17th spot.

Ex-England international Ellen White feels De Zerbi has proven to be a “great appointment” for Tottenham. She has hailed the 46-year-old’s infectious energy, praising the Italian for simplifying things and lifting the players’ confidence levels.
“You just need a little bit of confidence, a little bit of belief, a little bit of love, and maybe an arm around the shoulder instead of the screaming and shouting. Tell them that they are good players, put them in a system they believe in and just make them run first to start with,” Ellen White said on Final Score (h/t BBC Sport).
“It started with a disappointing loss, but then they got a draw, then another draw and then a scrappy win, and all of a sudden you start to believe. The players get a bit of confidence, and you can see it.
“De Zerbi’s energy is infectious, sprinting down the line, you see that as a player, and you want to run through brick walls for that person. I think he was a great appointment.”
De Zerbi makes transfer demands clear
In the aftermath of the Everton victory, De Zerbi made his transfer demands clear to the Tottenham board. He wants to add some “first-level” players to make a top Spurs squad for the 2026/27 season.
Indeed, the North Londoners must invest in quality players who can come in and hit the ground running under De Zerbi. Given Spurs will have no European distractions next term, De Zerbi and Co. will be able to focus entirely on the Premier League and try winning the domestic cup competitions. For that, he may not necessarily need a big squad, but before adding fresh blood, the departures of certain players are an absolute must.
