Tottenham midfielder linked with a move to Brentford.
Tottenham Hotspur haven’t been messing around in the summer transfer window as they look to bring in reinforcements to bounce back from a near-disastrous campaign.
After adding Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi to their roster, Spurs are now in talks to sign Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke and Manchester City winger Savinho. Reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi will push to sign a quality central midfielder in this transfer window. On Monday, the North Londoners reportedly entered the race for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Tonali is open to joining Tottenham, with De Zerbi pushing to bring him to the club. It appears several clubs are also interested in signing the Italian international this summer, but Spurs have held positive talks with the player and his camp. At the same time, Pape Matar Sarr is being linked with a move away from Spurs.
Brentford exploring move for Pape Matar Sarr
According to Sky Sports, Brentford are interested in signing Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr. The West London outfit have identified the 23-year-old as a key transfer target to bolster their midfield unit ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Pape Matar Sarr endured a quiet past season with the Lilywhites, losing his first-team spot. The constant chopping and changing of managers did not help the Senegalese international’s cause, with the box-to-box midfielder starting only 13 Premier League games. He was sparingly used by De Zerbi across the final seven games, as the likes of Conor Gallagher, Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur were preferred ahead of him in midfield.
At 23, Sarr is still relatively young and developing, but with Tottenham not involved in European competitions next season, his game time could only further reduce. Plus, if Spurs end up signing Tonali from Newcastle, he would find it extremely difficult to break into De Zerbi’s first XI. It would seemingly seal his exit from Tottenham.
A move to Brentford makes sense
The prospect of meaningful first-team involvement at White Hart Lane next season looks remote at best for Sarr. The fact that he played only 57 minutes across Tottenham’s final seven games tells its own story about where he stands in De Zerbi’s thinking.
Thus, a move to Brentford would make sense for the combative midfielder. He’d get a chance to establish himself in Keith Andrews’ first XI and play regularly, helping him resurrect his career. The Senegal starlet’s energy, running power and tenacity will be well received by the Gtech Community Stadium faithful. With uncertainty surrounding the contract situation of Mathias Jensen, Sarr could be viewed as a long-term replacement for the Dane.
That said, it will be interesting to see what De Zerbi’s stance is on Sarr, who’d be keen to get regular minutes to fulfil his potential.
