Tottenham are planning to smash their transfer record for Newcastle United star.
There have been a flurry of quick deals in the summer transfer window so far, with Tottenham Hotspur looking to get the bulk of their business done early.
Roberto De Zerbi is looking to get his squad in shape after last season’s disastrous 17th-place Premier League finish. Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi are already in, which is a clear indication of De Zerbi’s intent to strengthen the defensive base of his squad. In addition, Spurs have agreed a £52 million deal for Brighton star Jan Paul van Hecke. The Dutch defender is set to sign a long-term contract at White Hart Lane.
Earlier this week, reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Tottenham had entered the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. De Zerbi is driving a move for the Italian star, with talks already underway on the player side. Now, there has been fresh developments on a potential move that will hugely excite the fans.
Tottenham ready to break the bank for Sandro Tonali
Newcastle United are aware of Sandro Tonali’s desire to embrace a new challenge. This has led to interest from several clubs across Europe, including Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City.
However, Tottenham now seem to have stolen the march on their rivals in a move for the 26-year-old. They are now prepared to go the extra mile to seal the deal, too. According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla on X, Spurs would now also be willing to meet Newcastle’s ‘three-figure mark’ for Tonali.
This means the North London club are ready to smash their transfer record to complete a deal for the all-action midfielder, with a willingness to pay in the region of £100million. The Magpies are ready to sell Tonali if the price is right, as they did with Anthony Gordon to Barcelona to ensure they continue to comply with the PSR.
Pedulla adds that De Zerbi’s strong relationship with Tonali has led to the player prioritising Tottenham. The Lilywhites have not made any verbal proposals or offers to the Toon Army as yet, but have laid out their ambitions.
Tonali, who arrived at Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023, has proven himself in the Premier League. The Italian’s technical ability, tenacity, aggression, spatial awareness, tackling and leadership qualities will fit him like a glove in De Zerbi’s system. The former Brescia man would instantly elevate this Spurs squad and help them challenge for European spots next season.
All in all, ENIC want to back De Zerbi in the transfer market, and luring Tonali from St James’ Park to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would represent a statement of intent. Our club bosses have already held “positive talks” with the midfielder’s camp, with an approach to Newcastle set to follow swiftly if personal terms can be agreed with him.
