Knee scare comes for Tottenham star days after he told he wants to stay, so does this injury actually matter for a sale that might not happen anyway?

The star was injured in a recent World Cup group stage fixture.

Cristian Romero had his share of injury problems last season, which saw him sitting out many quite important Spurs games in that survival race. And the Argentine went down again in the second half of his country’s 2-0 win over Austria in the World Cup, clutching the same knee that ended his Tottenham season early after a clash against Sunderland.

The former Atalanta man did try to brush it off and play on, but he soon gave away a foul and was substituted just before the hour mark for former Man City center-back Nicolas Otamendi.

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni was quizzed about his situation in the aftermath of the game. And Scaloni ensured that he gave away a smartly worded reply that we have heard from managers time and again when they don’t yet know the full picture. He said, “Let us hope that the thing with Cuti is nothing.”

But what makes this injury more interesting (at least from the Lilywhites’ point of view) is that just hours before his injury against Austria, there were reports going around about Cristian Romero having told the Tottenham hierarchy that he wants to stay at N17 and help lead the rebuild that the North Londoners are undergoing with Roberto De Zerbi at the helm. And this came after months of speculations about his exit.

That u-turn from him came exactly the moment after Tottenham completed their defensive rebuild, keeping an exit in mind given the Lilywhites have brought in the likes of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke to revamp the backline.

And then when he goes down, you start thinking, Will the injury impact a possible sale? Given even if he does decide to stay, Tottenham would want to explore a possible Argentine exit given that Van Hecke is already coming in for a marquee fee to take his place in the squad.

But given that for the moment the latest around him is citing Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, who has since confirmed that Romero will not be playing in their last group stage game against Jordan as he looks to manage the discomfort in his knee, that does not put his World Cup participation in itself in jeopardy, showing that it’s nothing serious at the time of writing. So even if a possible sale were to materialize, this injury should ideally not be the hurdle for it to reach its conclusion.
