The star in question has been linked with an exit this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur center back Cristian Romero has been linked with a move away from Hotspur Way this summer, and with the Lilywhites bringing in Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in a marquee transfer, many fans expect the Argentine to be sold as a domino effect.
The former Atalanta man did change his stance last week and is now pushing for a stay as he looks to lead the North Londoners’ rebuild with Roberto De Zerbi.
But ideally the chiefs at Hotspur Way would prefer to have him pursue an exit given his injury problems of late, complemented by how he publicly lashed the stakeholders at N17 when things were going wayward last season.
Is Romero needed at Tottenham?
The signing of Marcos Senesi and Jan-Paul van Hecke are more in line with the ball-playing CBs that De Zerbi prefers as he wants players at the back that can build from the first phase rather than only defend in isolation. With these two coming in (in addition to Micky van de Ven), you suddenly have a sense of qualitative depth at the center-back position at N17, so Romero’s importance in the team diminishes because rather than being an integral part of the eleven, he is just another veteran option at the back.
And he has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid yet again. Los Rojiblancos did make multiple approaches to secure his signatures last summer, but the Lilywhites refused to sell him before going on to renew his contract in August that tied the Argentine down till 2029.
At the time when he was extensively linked with Tottenham, Atleti manager Diego Simeone said of Romero:
“As an Argentine fan, I admire his personality, his playing style, and his defensive work. As an Argentine fan who has seen more of his matches than Tottenham’s, I am a great admirer of his.”
Tottenham reduce Cristian Romero price for summer move
The North Londoners valued Romero for €70m last summer when Atletico were pushing for his services, but according to a recent report from Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham are said to have slashed their valuation by more than half in less than twelve months. The latest report as relayed by Sport Witness states that the Lilywhites would be happy to let go of the World Cup winner for somewhere in the region of €30 million.
And this ‘considerable reduction’ will push the Spanish giants to take up the market opportunity to land his signatures.
€30 sounds too good to be true; it is highly unlikely that Tottenham would let go of a player who is among the best in the league in his position for such a cheap fee.
Do you think Tottenham will sell Romero for around half the price from the tagged fee last summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
