Not Mateus Fernandes: Man United compound on signing Tottenham target

The midfielder’s team just exited the World Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to compound on their roster in the ongoing summer window, and we have already seen how Roberto De Zerbi has been moving quite aggressively this offseason with the Lilywhites having already secured four signings and tabling a massive bid to bring Sandro Tonali to N17 from Newcastle United.

All four of Spurs’ signings have come on the defensive side of things. And while the North Londoners have secured the arrival of Andy Robertson on a free transfer, Tottenham have also held interest in signing another top-level left-back who has been running the rule in the offensive side of things in the Portuguese league.

United run rule as they pursue move for Tottenham target

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Maximiliano Araujo since late last season. But while Spurs have been quietly observing in the background, their Premier League rivals Manchester United have spent the last few days sending scouts to watch him at the ongoing World Cup.

According to a recent report from Record as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester Reds have intensified their pursuit of signing the Sporting CP wing-back. The report insists that Michael Carrick & Co. have tracked Araujo for over a year now, and a United representative was watching him in person in Uruguay’s group stage game against Cape Verde. And they are at the front of the queue for a possible move for the 26-year-old.

Tottenham need to sell to pursue Maxi Araujo transfer

While Tottenham have been interested in his signing as well, the North Londoners’ move for him will be tied to an outgoing, be it either Djed Spence or Destiny Udogie. With Andrew Robertson adding that sense of quality and depth in the left-back role, the Lilywhites will need to sell at least one of the aforementioned two names to make space for the Uruguayan international in the squad.

While Spence is predominantly a right back, he has spent a big part of the last two seasons covering at left back, and he has done it so much that Thomas Tuchel called him up to the England squad for the World Cup because of that versatility and has also played him in both positions.

The 26-year-old has been one of Uruguay’s standout performers at the tournament, but it is to be seen if Tottenham do rival Man United in another transfer this summer or they give them a free run at him.

Would you sell either Spence or Udogie to bring Araujo to Hotspur Way? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
