Tottenham are planning to loan out a young defender in this transfer window.
Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, Jan-Paul Van Hecke, and Martin Dubravka have all arrived at Tottenham Hotspur as part of Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild this summer.
The focus has been on strengthening a defensive unit that conceded 57 goals in the Premier League last season. De Zerbi has targeted Premier League proven commodities to speed up the rebuilding process, hoping to see all of them make an immediate impact at White Hart Lane.
The signing of Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool means the Lilywhites now have four options at left-back. We now have Robertson, Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies and Souza, and for De Zerbi’s side set to compete only in domestic competitions next season, the left-back department requires trimming.
Souza set to leave Tottenham on loan
According to a report from The Times, Souza is likely to go out on loan this summer.
Souza arrived in a £13million deal from Santos as cover for the injured Udogie during the winter transfer window. He received rave reviews after his breakthrough in the Santos senior side, leading to several clubs across the globe taking notice. But, amid rising interest, Tottenham acted swiftly and agreed a deal to sign the Brazilian Under-21 international.
The defender was limited to only four Premier League outings, two of which came as a starter. He played 144 minutes of top-flight action. Under De Zerbi, Souza did not get a look-in. He was a bench rider across the final seven games of the season, as Spurs narrowly escaped relegation.
Now with Robertson coming in and Davies handed a one-year contract extension, Souza’s immediate future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has become uncertain. He is unlikely to be fancied much by De Zerbi, so the best possible option for the young left-back is to go out on loan and get vital minutes under his belt. The Brazilian has just turned 20 and is in the developmental phase of his career, so a role on the bench is simply unacceptable.
The former Santos starlet is almost guaranteed to secure a loan move away from White Hart Lane. Tottenham chiefs have to find the right destination for Souza. Since he is adapting to European football, a move to one of the competitive leagues makes sense. Spurs can follow the Luka Vuskovic pathway and loan Souza out to the Bundesliga for the 2026/27 season.
