Tottenham are aiming to beat Manchester United to the signing of West Ham midfielder.
Tottenham Hotspur are showing ambition in the transfer market. Andy Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have all become a part of Roberto De Zerbi’s squad, and the Spurs chiefs want to bring in more new faces.
Midfield seems to be the priority right now, with De Zerbi eyeing moves for Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. As far as Mateus Fernandes is concerned, the West Ham midfielder has fast become one of the most in-demand players of the summer window. The Hammers have cleared the player to leave the London Stadium, provided their financial demands are met. They are looking to double their £40m investment from Southampton made just a year ago.
Fernandes made 38 appearances across all competitions for West Ham last term, scoring four goals and supplying three assists, and he was one of their most impressive performers as they suffered relegation down to the Championship for the first time since 2011.

Tottenham are facing direct competition from Manchester United for Fernandes’ signing. Now, according to West Ham insider Claret & Hugh, both clubs are said to have reached an agreement on personal terms with the 21-year-old, who is open to joining whichever club can agree a fee with the Hammers.
Spurs are understood to have offered a deal worth approximately £140,000-a-week to the Portugal international to persuade him to move to North London. The central midfielder is facing a huge salary reduction following the Irons’ relegation from the top flight. On top of that, the player is not willing to play in the Championship next season.
De Zerbi’s club may feel they have the upper hand for the Fernandes deal, but the dream of playing with his idol, Bruno Fernandes, and the appeal of Champions League football could prove too powerful to resist if Man United can agree on a fee with West Ham. Interestingly, the £80million asking fee is beyond what United feel the player is worth and are currently not meeting the Irons’ demands. This has opened the door for Tottenham to begin talks of their own with the Championship club.
Spurs are reportedly planning to launch their first bid for Fernandes, and that could happen soon after agreeing personal terms with the player.
