Tottenham midfielder is attracting interest from Serie A club.
Tottenham Hotspur have already spent £52million on Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton and Hove Albion, whilst snapping up Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers. The club officials are currently chasing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali as their marquee signing of the summer transfer window.
Spurs’ intent to spend big in this transfer window has been made clear from their pursuit of Tonali, who is expected to cost a bomb. Alongside Tonali, we are battling Manchester United for the signing of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Departures in midfield are expected if the North Londoners add significantly, with Lucas Bergvall having already indicated his desire to leave amid interest from several clubs. Napoli also explored a move for Bergvall, although Tottenham’s €50m asking price is proving to be an obstacle. This has led to the Serie A side pivoting to another Spurs midfield talent.
Napoli eye move for Pape Matar Sarr
According to Italian daily Il Mattino (h/t Tutto Napoli), Napoli are eyeing a move for Pape Matar Sarr. The Italian side have identified the Tottenham man as a replacement for Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who is expected to leave Naples.
Pape Matar Sarr struggled to get starts under Roberto De Zerbi towards the end of last season. The Senegalese international, currently on World Cup duty, made only 26 Premier League appearances. He had to leave Spurs midway through the campaign to represent his nation at the AFCON, where Senegal lost controversially to Morocco in the final.
With four years still left on Sarr’s contract in N17, any move would likely require Napoli to make a significant financial investment. The lure of Champions League football could be too good to ignore for the African star, who could be worried about the prospect of reduced game time next season following the club’s interest in both Tonali and Fernandes. It is not yet known whether he’d be open to departing Tottenham, but Napoli aren’t the only club interested in the 23-year-old.
Over recent weeks, Brentford have expressed an interest in Sarr as well, while Turkish giants Fenerbahce were keeping close tabs on him in March. If Spurs end up signing both Tonali and Fernandes, Sarr would find it extremely difficult to break into De Zerbi’s first XI.
Thus, if the Senegalese talent pushes for a move away from White Hart Lane, our bosses must not stand in his way. Tottenham chiefs will want a bidding war to erupt between the aforementioned clubs to get a sizeable fee from Sarr’s sale.
