Tottenham Hotspur’s chequebook has had so many outings, and the next name reportedly on the list is Eli Junior Kroupi. Bournemouth lining up Elche’s Alvaro Rodriguez as cover suggests Kroupi’s exit is closer than it looked a fortnight ago. Good news. That is as per Sports View.
Kroupi is 20, broke the Premier League record for goals by a teenager in his debut campaign, and followed it with 13 in 33 last season. His versatility across the front line fits De Zerbi‘s stated preference for forwards who can operate in more than one position, and he’s an obvious long-term successor to Richarlison, whose future remains unresolved.
If the fee comes in anywhere near that £90m figure, though, we are talking about nearly a third of what some entire promoted clubs spent building a whole squad on one teenager with one standout season and one solid follow-up behind him.
What next for Spurs?
That is the bit worth sitting with. Nobody is disputing the talent. The question is whether the finishing skillset and the ceiling justify a fee at the very top of the market for a forward who has not yet had to lead the line for a club fighting on multiple fronts in a league where he’ll face better defenders every single week than he has so far.
There is a version of this window where Spurs spend big and smart. There is another where we end up the club that paid over the odds because Bournemouth know exactly how desperate we are to sort the attack after a campaign where goals dried up at the worst possible moments. But that’s the market now, and it is what it is.
Arsenal’s reported interest complicates things further, and it’s worth being honest about what that competition does to the price. Bidding wars rarely end with the buying club getting a bargain, and especially when you’re up against the Premier League champions, notwithstanding the fact that they’re also league rivals.
None of this means walk away. It means go in with eyes open. Brutally honest: this fee, if accurate, is a gamble. Hopeful: if Kroupi delivers even seventy per cent of his debut-season numbers in a Spurs shirt, nobody will remember the price tag.
