Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi is planning to add another goalkeeper after signing Martin Dubravka.
After agreeing a club-record deal with West Ham to sign Mateus Fernandes for £85m, Tottenham Hotspur have now found an agreement with Newcastle United to further strengthen their midfield with Sandro Tonali. We have agreed to pay a fixed fee of £92.5m for Tonali, plus a further £7.5m in add-ons.
The additions of Fernandes and Tonali will take Spurs’ midfield to a different level. Their purchases will take the North London club’s summer signings to six, with the likes of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka and Jan Paul van Hecke having already arrived at White Hart Lane. The N17 bosses surprised many by snapping up Dubravka on a free transfer from Burnley. Well, it is quite a calculated move that comes amid speculation surrounding Guglielmo Vicario’s future.
Vicario has been heavily linked with a return to Serie A in recent months. After Inter Milan cooled their interest, Juventus have been tracking his situation at Tottenham. With their new CEO recently revealing that he is high on their goalkeeping shortlist, Spurs are braced for offers from Juventus for Vicario.
Despite signing Dubravka, Spurs are now showing interest in a goalkeeper from the Premier League.
Tottenham eye move for Manchester City goalkeeper
According to a report from the Independent, Tottenham are interested in signing Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford. They are pushing for a deal, as the England international is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium after playing second fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma last term.
James Trafford, currently on World Cup duty, was largely restricted to appearances in the domestic cup competitions on his return to Manchester City. The 23-year-old’s hopes of establishing himself as a No.1 were dashed when the Cityzens brought in Donnarumma from PSG. With Donnarumma the undisputed No.1, Trafford’s prospects of playing regularly for his boyhood club appear extremely slim next season under new boss Enzo Maresca.
Thus, the English shot-stopper is planning to leave the Etihad Stadium and join a club that would allow him regular minutes. Spurs feel they could be that club, despite signing Dubravka and recently handing a new contract to Antonin Kinsky. The improved terms are an indication of Kinsky’s promotion as the first-choice goalkeeper, but De Zerbi wants quality competition.
Trafford has caught the Italian tactician’s attention. However, it is unclear whether Trafford will be open to joining De Zerbi’s side as he is not guaranteed a place in the starting XI. Signing the former Burnley star will be massive for the Lilywhites as we could end up with two quality goalkeepers fighting for the No.1 spot.
While that is exactly what De Zerbi wants, Trafford’s preference might be different. That said, it remains to be seen whether we approach City for their English custodian.
