Tottenham have been in talks with Manchester City for Savinho, while AC Milan’s Rafael Leao has emerged as a target lately. Liverpool star Cody Gakpo has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs in the past few weeks.
Fabrizio Romano drops latest update on Liverpool winger’s links to Tottenham
Cody Gakpo was understood to have been considering his future at Anfield after Arne Slot’s sacking, but reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that Liverpool have no intention of selling the Netherlands international. He has told the Tottenham fans to keep an eye on the player’s situation, although it may take a big proposal to change Liverpool’s stance.
“Keep an eye on Tottenham for Cody Gakpo, because Tottenham have interest in the player. Then I can tell you that Liverpool, as of today, the beginning of July, are not opening doors to an exit. So, at the moment, Liverpool are not telling Gakpo, ‘Okay, you can leave’, they are not telling Tottenham, ‘Okay, let’s negotiate’. This is not happening now,” Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“So, at the moment, the door is closed from Liverpool, but we have to see later on this summer, in case Tottenham really open talks by sending a proposal. At the moment, there is interest. If they send a proposal, we have to see what’s going to happen there. So, it’s a story to keep an eye on.”
Tottenham must push to sign Cody Gakpo
Gakpo was undoubtedly the Netherlands’ best player at the World Cup. He scored three goals and an assist in four appearances, before the Oranje were knocked out by Morocco in a penalty shootout earlier this week. He showed great mental fortitude and resilience to overcome a personal tragedy, start the game against Morocco and score.
As Romano notes, Liverpool have no intention to sell Gakpo as of today. This is purely because the Reds are short-staffed in attack following the departure of the club great, Mohamed Salah, and the long-term Achilles injury to Hugo Ekitike. Spanish international Victor Munoz has officially moved to Anfield to become the first signing of the Andoni Iraola era, but the Merseysiders need more faces up front to compete on all fronts.
Gakpo’s versatility, experience and availability make him a valuable asset, so Iraola would want to work with him and change his decision. That said, if De Zerbi is really keen on having the Dutch star in his ranks, Tottenham will have to push for his signature.
