Tottenham Hotspur smashed their transfer record earlier this week when completing the £85m acquisition of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham. That record will tumble in short order once Sandro Tonali joins in an eye-watering £100m deal from Newcastle United.
In the wake of recent transfer developments, Lucas Bergvall has expressed a desire to leave Spurs this summer in search of regular game time elsewhere. Despite arriving in North London with high expectations only two summers ago, the Swedish midfielder is actively seeking a move away this summer.
This is down to him not featuring enough across the last seven games of the 2025/26 season under Roberto De Zerbi, and the youngster fears his minutes will further plummet following the big-money acquisitions of Fernandes and Tonali. After Sweden’s elimination from the World Cup at the hands of France, Lucas Bergvall said he’s unsure of his future, but insisted he wants regular game time.
Lucas Bergvall urged to leave Tottenham
IFK Värnamo midfielder Simon Thern has backed Bergvall to leave Spurs after hearing De Zerbi does not like certain aspects of the midfielder’s playing style. He wants his compatriot to keep his style, and if required, move on to pastures new.
“Incredible player. The speed and the desire to always move forward on the pitch makes me happy. Always tries to be fair,” Simon Thern wrote in his column for Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen.
“Heard talk about De Zerbi not liking players who take too many touches on the ball… stupidest thing I’ve ever heard! Had the Tottenham coach left Messi out of the eleven then for the sake of “his” system? For God’s sake, don’t change your playing style, Lucas! Because it’s cruel. Rather change teams if it becomes a ‘problem’.”
Roberto De Zerbi wants Lucas Bergvall to stay
Recent reports suggest that De Zerbi and Johan Lange have held discussions with Bergvall and addressed his growing concerns over his projected game time. They are both understood to have assured the 20-year-old of his key role in the North London club’s long-term vision and strategy.
Indeed, Bergvall has been one of the burgeoning talents at Tottenham, and the decision-makers at N17 would certainly want him to continue in the same vein. The Scandinavian talent has the technical ability, maturity, spatial awareness and energy to operate in several roles across the midfield. But most importantly, he has a very high ceiling, which our club officials are aware of after beating Barcelona to his signature in February 2024, so selling Bergvall now would be rash.
For De Zerbi to keep hold of the central midfielder, he must ensure Bergvall gets a prominent role in his XI next season.
