Tottenham are interested in signing Switzerland winger currently impressing at the World Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur will likely shift their transfer focus to their forward line now, having already completed several deals in defence and midfield this summer.
At the beginning of the week, the club announced the capture of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a club-record £100m deal. It shattered the club record Spurs had set just last week with the £85 million arrival of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, and takes our summer spending over £230 million.
Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi still has areas of his squad he wants to improve, and we are likely to see further incomings in the coming weeks. The £100million capital injection by the Lewis Family has boosted the transfer kitty, allowing the Lilywhites to spend further on addressing the problematic positions.
Although Savinho remains Tottenham’s chief target to strengthen the wide areas of the pitch, the club has now been linked with another wide attacker.
Tottenham among clubs interested in signing Sevilla winger
According to a report from Spanish outlet OrgulloBiri, Tottenham are one of the clubs interested in signing Sevilla winger Ruben Vargas. Aston Villa and Trabzonspor also remain keen on the player.
Ruben Vargas arrived at Sevilla in January 2025 from German club FC Augsburg and is under contract until 2029. He has bagged five goals and seven assists in 36 appearances for Sevilla in one-and-a-half seasons, and the winger is currently impressing at the World Cup. The 27-year-old has played a key role in Switzerland’s qualification to the last-16 of the World Cup with two goals and an assist in four appearances.
This has enhanced Vargas’ reputation across the world, sparking interest from several high-profile clubs. The report adds that Sevilla are in no rush to sell their star winger, although they would be willing to consider offers exceeding €15-20m. Also, the Swiss attacker wants to play in the Champions League, a factor that could impact his final decision if an attractive sporting and financial offer is tabled.
In that case, Spurs would find it difficult to compete with Aston Villa for Vargas’ signing. De Zerbi’s side will not compete in Europe next season, which could work against their pursuit of the Sevilla man. Aston Villa won the Europa League in May and will play in the Champions League next term, so ideally, they are in an advantageous position when it comes to signing the player.
However, having managed to lure quality players such as Tonali, Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi without Champions League football, Tottenham must look to persuade Vargas to join De Zerbi’s project.
