Tottenham have broken the bank to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.
Sandro Tonali has now officially become Tottenham Hotspur’s record signing, with our club confirming his arrival in a £100m deal from Newcastle United at the start of the week.
The Italian emerged as Roberto De Zerbi’s primary midfield target of the summer transfer window following his excellent performances for Newcastle United in the past two seasons. A deal for the 26-year-old did not come easy, with De Zerbi’s club having to beat both Manchester City and Arsenal to his signature.
Sandro Tonali’s addition has taken Tottenham’s spending to an eye-watering £237 million this summer. The central midfielder has revealed that De Zerbi played a key role in making a move to Spurs possible.

Breaking the bank for Tonali is a huge sign of intent from Tottenham, who are seeking to return to Europe after narrowly escaping relegation last season. De Zerbi wanted both Tonali and Mateus Fernandes as part of his midfield restructuring, and he has got them. The Italian midfielder has already proven that he is a quality player in the Premier League, so there aren’t any second thoughts over whether he’d do well or not at Spurs.
De Zerbi admires his compatriot’s combative playing style and feels he will flourish in his system. Not only is he adept at winning the ball, but Tonali also excels in controlling the tempo of play, creating chances in the final third and making late runs in the box to finish off chances. He is also going to be the club’s highest-paid player, earning a baseline wage of £250,000 a week, and should the Lilywhites qualify for the Champions League, it will bump to £280,000 a week.
All in all, the boy from Brescia will certainly be a smash hit under De Zerbi at Tottenham.
