Tottenham could compete with Aston Villa for highly-rated Ligue 1 winger.
Following a close escape from relegation, Tottenham Hotspur have been rampant and are splashing the cash to get back to their previous heights towards the top of the Premier League table.
Spurs completed their sixth summer signing at the start of the week, announcing the club-record capture of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. Much more work still needs to be done in improving Roberto De Zerbi’s squad, with quality attacking profiles required to address the final third problems of last season.
It has been widely reported that signing a top-class winger is a priority for the north London side. AC Milan star Rafael Leao has emerged as a target lately, but a new update suggests that Spurs are also keeping close tabs on a teenage sensation, who has showcased his quality on the big stage this summer.
Tottenham following Paris Saint-Germain starlet
According to reliable French journalist Santi Aouna on X, Tottenham are closely following the situation of Paris Saint-Germain winger Ibrahim Mbaye. Aston Villa remain very interested in the teenager too.
Ibrahim Mbaye has come through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain. He played 23 times across all competitions for the French champions, but started just once in Ligue 1. The Senegalese international, who recently showed his talent at the World Cup, doesn’t want to settle for a bit-part role under Luis Enrique and wants to leave PSG this summer, even though his entourage wants him to continue in the French capital.
Mbaye has done reasonably well since breaking into the senior PSG side during the 2024/25 campaign. He has made 42 appearances across two seasons thus far, registering eight goal contributions.
Should Spurs invest in Mbaye?
Mbaye is an extremely talented player with huge potential and could well develop into a top-quality winger. He demonstrated glimpses of his talent at the World Cup, scoring in Senegal’s 3-1 defeat to France in the group stages. At 18, he has a long way to go in his career and requires the right coach to help him unlock his true potential.
For Spurs, though, signing the PSG starlet does not align well with the current transfer strategy. The north Londoners have prioritised signing ready-made, Premier League-proven commodities to back De Zerbi in the transfer market. As far as Mbaye is concerned, he is very young, developing and unproven at a high level. Plus, the 15-cap Senegalese international would not hugely improve what Tottenham currently have at De Zerbi’s disposal.
That said, Tottenham must avoid signing Mbaye and look for more proven wide attackers that fit our newly-adopted transfer strategy.
