Tottenham are looking to replace Guglielmo Vicario with another Serie A goalkeeper.
Tottenham Hotspur are in the midst of a record-breaking transfer window that has seen them spend more than £230million so far. They have captured six signings and will continue to spend, backing Roberto De Zerbi to put together a squad to challenge for Champions League spots next season.
However, the books need to be balanced, and that would only happen when the Lilywhites make important sales. As Tottenham will not participate in European competitions, Roberto De Zerbi would want to have a smaller squad but with sufficient depth. As part of players internally transfer-listed, Guglielmo Vicario remains one of those.
Vicario struggled for consistency in the past season, managing just seven clean sheets in 31 Premier League appearances before undergoing hernia surgery during the March international break. As Spurs have snapped up Martin Dubravka on a free transfer from Burnley and handed Antonin Kinsky a new, improved deal, Vicario’s time in N17 appears to be up.
The Italian international has been heavily linked with a move to Juventus since the start of the summer. And it looks like Roberto De Zerbi has found Vicario’s potential replacement at Juventus.
Juventus goalkeeper emerges on Tottenham’s radar
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Tottenham have made a ‘decisive’ move for Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio. De Zerbi ‘greatly appreciates’ the 28-year-old and wants to make him a part of his squad next season. He views the Juventus man as a possible replacement for Vicario, who is on his way out of Spurs.
Michele Di Gregorio joined Juventus initially on loan from AC Monza in 2024 and played a key role in the club’s qualification to Champions League football. His loan automatically turned permanent, although the Italian glovesman failed to live up to the lofty expectations at the Allianz Stadium. He did not enjoy a strong season in Juve colours, whilst his agent’s recent explosive rant on social media has not helped Di Gregorio’s cause.
Juve’s new CEO Giovanni Carnevali is open to offers for Di Gregorio. He wants at least €15 million to let the experienced shot-stopper depart this summer, the report adds.
De Zerbi may push Tottenham to go for Di Gregorio
Vicario has not done enough to become Hugo Lloris’ successor, but it cannot be denied that he remains a leader on and off the pitch at Tottenham. So, losing him would be a blow in terms of experience and leadership, and De Zerbi may want to replace Vicario with someone of similar characteristics.
De Zerbi is an admirer of Di Gregorio’s qualities and appears interested in bringing him to north London to replace Vicario. If that happens, what would the future hold for Kinsky? Would the 23-year-old be back to acting as a No.2 once again, despite impressing during the relegation run-in? Or would Di Gregorio be brought in to operate as Kinsky’s understudy next season?
Such questions would require answers before Spurs can proceed to sign the Juventus custodian.
