Tottenham not triggering the buy option clause sees 31-year-old midfield vet return to Bayern Munich

Tottenham have opted not to trigger the buy option clause of Joao Palhinha as Roberto De Zerbi reshapes his midfield after Sandro Tonali’s arrival.

Tottenham Hotspur have officially decided against triggering the permanent buy option clause for Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha. The combative defensive anchor will subsequently return to his parent club, FC Bayern Munich, following the conclusion of his loan spell in North London.

According to a confirmation from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X, the decision marks the definitive end of Palhinha’s brief stint with the Lilywhites.

While speculative links had surfaced regarding a potential emotional return to his former club Sporting CP, Romano reports that a move back to the Portuguese side is currently not close. The 31-year-old Palhinha is understood to be keeping his options open as he prepares to embark on a brand new chapter in his career.

The choice to let Palhinha walk away without triggering his permanent clause comes right as head coach Roberto De Zerbi begins a necessary squad-trimming process. With six new players arriving at the club this summer, the manager and technical director Johan Lange have implemented a strict policy regarding the size, structure, and value of the senior team.

While Palhinha provided veteran cover during his loan tenure, the mid-window arrival of midfield maestro Sandro Tonali drastically shifted the dynamic of Tottenham’s engine room. By freeing up the wages and squad space previously occupied by the Portuguese international, the hierarchy gains more flexibility to fine-tune other critical areas of the first-team framework before the market closes.

Tottenham Keep Options Open for Final Midfield Targets

Palhinha’s departure does not necessarily mean Tottenham are finished modifying their central core. The recruiting department remains incredibly proactive in searching out high-potential assets that better align with De Zerbi’s long-term tactical philosophy.

The club has already advanced in talks to secure 16-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers starlet Kwasi Senyah, a highly rated defensive midfielder earmarked as a future anchor for the squad. By clearing out temporary veteran options, Spurs are actively creating a smoother pathway for incoming technical talent while ensuring the senior roster remains streamlined and highly competitive for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
