Tottenham skipper Cristian Romero has shone for Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur have made some eye-catching moves in the summer transfer window thus far. Apart from breaking the club transfer record twice in a week with the signings of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, the Hotspur Way chiefs have added well to their defensive ranks.
Addressing the defensive problems became a priority at the start of the summer, and the Lilywhites have brought in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke. Now, it is time to offload the defenders surplus to the gaffer’s requirements, and the club have started the mini exodus by loaning out Radu Dragusin to Fiorentina.
The €45m Cristian Romero is also linked with an exit. The central defender has previously indicated his desire to leave Tottenham, with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona said to be among the clubs interested. The 28-year-old is under contract until 2029 and is currently with Argentina at the World Cup, with talks expected to take place after the tournament.
Fabrizio Romano expects transfer race to heat up for Cristian Romero after the World Cup
Cristian Romero has been a key figure for Argentina in reaching the quarter-finals at the World Cup. With Egypt winning 2-0 in the Round of 16, the Tottenham skipper inspired one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history.
He scored the first of three goals in the 79th minute, with Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez pulling off a stunning comeback against Egypt. Of course, the Argentine has been key for his nation throughout the showpiece event, and his spirited display against Egypt will have caught the attention of many admirers.
Tottenham have decided to cash in on their skipper after significantly strengthening their defensive ranks this summer, and reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano’s words would have further lifted their hopes. He has revealed on X that Romero’s impressive performances at the World Cup have caught the eye of several big clubs, with La Liga and Serie A sides eyeing a move for the defender. The Italian even suggested that the race for the Tottenham star could intensify over the coming weeks.
Spurs must move on from Romero
Regardless of his impressive displays in North America, Tottenham parting ways with Romero remains a serious possibility. The Argentina international has internally expressed his desire to try a new chapter away from England, and having already plied his trade in Italy, La Liga could become an ideal destination.
Atletico Madrid have a long-standing interest in Romero and are ready to make their move if Spurs open the door. Barcelona, meanwhile, remain keen on the Cordoba-born star too and hope to pip their rivals to his signature. The Tottenham chiefs would want a bidding war to erupt for their skipper after the World Cup, allowing them to sell him and bank in a sizeable profit.
