Micah Richards accidentally explained the Pedro Porro problem and Tottenham’s summer business is about to fix it

Published:

Pedro Porro recently signed a long-term contract extension.

Tottenham Hotspur had endured a difficult 2025/26 campaign, but Roberto De Zerbi has taken that on his chin and is leading the charge to change at Hotspur Way. We could already see that front-footed approach in how the Lilywhites have approached the ongoing transfer window.

But while there is a lot of rumored incoming at N17, there is a certain player pulling strings at the ongoing World Cup that the Italian manager would be looking at and rubbing his palms in excitement.

Micah Richards gets candid on Tottenham star who is putting in impressive performances this World Cup

Tottenham fans have known how capable Pedro Porro is for a long time now, given how he has often shined in Lilywhites’ sides that have underperformed time and again for some time. But in this World Cup we are seeing the Rayo Vallecano academy graduate shine on a global level after netting a goal and keeping three clean sheets as he helped Spain into the semi-finals following a 2-1 win over Belgium at SoFi Stadium yesterday.

And former Man City full-back turned pundit, Micah Richards, was left impressed with the performances that Porro has been putting in lately while going on to ponder over the reasons behind why the same level of performances are not seen from him at Hotspur Way.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast last week (via. Tottenham Hotspur News), he said:

“He looks a completely different player. Yes, he’s always got energy [at Tottenham] and can get up and down, but he’s doing it with real quality [for Spain].

“I don’t know if it’s because he’s playing with higher-quality players.”

Porro can finally succeed at Tottenham?

Porro did bail Tottenham out a few times in the last couple of campaigns, and if we go by Sofascore ratings, he was the third best player on the roster at Hotspur Way last season, with Joao Palhinha being second and somehow (even if we don’t agree on this) Cristian Romero being in the percentile.

But that being said, Palhinha’s loan will not be renewed, while Romero is also possible heading out the door this summer. So Porro will be the best of what is left from last campaign in the aftermath of a summer exodus. And now with Tonali and Fernandes coming in while Kudus is finding fitness again, the Spaniard will have a bit of quality around him that can possibly aid him to replicate his performances this World Cup.

He has the capacity to easily develop into the same kind of player as Richards sees for playing for Spain in front of the biggest footballing audience in the world, except donning a Lilywhites badge week in week out.

Do you think we have not seen the best of Porro at Tottenham yet (at least consistently) because of the players around him? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
