The star has been linked with an exit from Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been streaming and rejoicing in the perfection that Djed Spence has been putting in at the World Cup with England.
There were a lot of eyebrows raised when Thomas Tuchel included him in the roster for this World Cup. But Spence has been balling it out donning that Three Lions badge, and he is surely England’s best hope to keep Messi shut in the upcoming semifinal fixture later this week.
But as he prepares to face Argentina, there have been rumors going around about his future in North London. There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the 25-year-old given interests from a fellow Premier League rival for his signature.
Everton interested in Djed Spence
David Moyes’ Everton has been credited with interest in his signature as the Merseysiders look to capitalize on their new stadium with a marquee roster. And the Blues are said to have identified Spence as an ideal fit for their problems at right back.
They are said to be open to sanctioning a £25m move to take Spence away from Hotspur Way.
But as per veteran transfer insider Pete O’Rourke, the Lilywhites are not desperate to sell Djed Spence, with the former Middlesbrough man keen to fight his place out in Roberto De Zerbi’s eleven at N17.
When quizzed about the immediate future of Spence at Tottenham, he said to Football Insider:
“Nothing is imminent on his future as he’s currently away at the World Cup with England. He’s done okay for England, filling in when needed.
“His immediate thought will be to try and come back and impress at Spurs, and he did play most of the games under De Zerbi when he took over at the back end of the season as well.
“Obviously he is under contract until 2029, with the option of a further year, so Spurs are under no immediate pressure to sell him.”
Tottenham have depth in the left back role, does Spence fit at right back?
Tottenham are building a squad that is percentile in all positions, and this is where someone like Spence could find himself in trenches. This World Cup has proved that he is ideally better at left back than his preferred right, but that is where Spurs already have Destiny Udogie and summer arrival Andy Robertson.
Moreover, Tottenham will be tempted to cash in on him while his value his is still high and then use that money to bring in a right back that is more suited to the playing style that De Zerbi wants to deploy at Tottenham.
But that being said, it will take a significant fee to push Spurs and Vinai into selling him, especially given the progress that he has enjoyed in the last couple of years and the performances that he has been putting in the ongoing World Cup.
