With Cristian Romero/Marcos Senesi representing Argentina, or Djed Spence representing England, against Pedro Porro’s Spain, at least one Spurs player is guaranteed a World Cup winner’s medal on Sunday in New York. Confirmed by @SpursArmyTweets and Alisdair Gold on Tuesday, that would make Tottenham the first Premier League club ever to have a World Cup winner in three successive tournaments.
The chain started in Russia in 2018. Hugo Lloris, then Tottenham captain, lifted the trophy as France defeated Croatia 4-2 in Moscow to win the country’s second World Cup. It was a moment that made Lloris the first ever active Spurs player to win the tournament. Four years later in Qatar, Cristian Romero took his place in the same bracket. The Argentine started six of Argentina’s seven matches as Lionel Scaloni’s side beat France on penalties in a final that has already entered football folklore. Lloris, this time on the losing side, watched on as his former club teammate lifted a trophy he himself had won four years earlier.

Now the baton passes to Sunday’s final. Romero has started every knockout game in North America and scored during the comeback win over Egypt in the round of 16. Senesi, signed from Bournemouth this summer, is part of the same squad having been called up as injury cover. Spence, meanwhile, has been very impactful off the bench for England. On the other side, Porro scored in the semifinal destruction of France and has started every knockout fixture for Spain. Djed Spence, whose England were beaten by Argentina in the last four, is already out.
