Young Tottenham defender is set to be loaned out this summer
23 Tottenham Hotspur players were part of the first group to return from their summer break at the start of the week. They were pictured at Hotspur Way in the first few days ahead of the pre-season.
Additionally, new signings Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes reported for training as well, much to the delight of our fans. However, a young defender, who arrived at the club in the January transfer window, is yet to begin pre-season training with his club teammates.
Journo claims Tottenham left-back will likely go out on loan
Souza is the name of that player. According to Football London journalist Alasdair Gold, the young left-back has missed the first few days of training due to illness.
The Brazilian youth international arrived at Spurs in a £13m deal from Santos in January. Brought in to act as a back-up to injury-prone Destiny Udogie, Souza managed just four appearances during the second half of the season. He did not play a single minute across the final seven games under Roberto De Zerbi, as the Lilywhites survived relegation by the skin of their teeth.
Alasdair Gold reveals that Souza is not expected to be a part of De Zerbi’s squad next season as he will be loaned out. Andy Robertson has been snapped up on a free transfer from Liverpool to cover and compete with Udogie, which should trigger a temporary move for Souza.
Souza needs a solid loan
Souza is a talent with high upside, but in the current scenario, he is unlikely to get many opportunities to play at Tottenham. The current Spurs squad is stacked with full-backs, so the best thing for him will be to go out on loan for the 2026/27 season.
The Brazilian requires a strong loan to continue his development. The Tottenham bosses have to try their best to pick the right club where the 20-year-old gets regular minutes with the right coaching and guidance. Spurs can follow Luka Vuskovic’s pathway and send Souza to the Bundesliga for the upcoming season. Or else, he could spend a year in the Championship to toughen up and get used to the physicality and pace of English football.
That said, it will be interesting to see where Souza ends up temporarily.
