Tottenham could sign another midfielder if Lucas Bergvall departs.
Tottenham Hotspur have backed Roberto De Zerbi massively in the transfer market, bringing in as many as six players thus far. The club’s owners have already spent close to £240m in transfer fees, but they aren’t done yet.
The big-money signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have put the futures of a few midfielders in doubt in N17. Lucas Bergvall, wary of a limited role next season, has expressed a desire to leave the club. The 20-year-old wants regular minutes to continue his development and eventually fulfil his vast potential.
Nottingham Forest are keen to sign Bergvall and have already seen their opening £38m bid rejected by Tottenham. They are planning to return with an improved bid, as new manager Oliver Glasner wants to bring the Swede to the City Ground this summer. Spurs are ready to sell the talented midfielder in the region of £50 million.
In the wake of Bergvall’s possible departure, the North London outfit are scouring the market for his replacement. This has led to them keeping tabs on the situation of the RB Leipzig midfielder.
Tottenham eye move for RB Leipzig midfielder Arthur Vermeeren
Tottenham have been following RB Leipzig midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, who plays a bit like Joshua Kimmich, for months now. The 21-year-old spent the last season on loan at Marseille, which was managed by Roberto De Zerbi until he decided to part ways by mutual consent on February 11 after the club’s hammering at the hands of PSG and Champions League exit. So, the Italian boss is aware of the player’s qualities on and off the ball, and maybe is pushing the Lilywhites to make a move for him.
Now, Spurs have been handed a boost in their pursuit of the Belgian midfielder. According to a report from FussballDaten, RB Leipzig would be open to selling Arthur Vermeeren for €30 million this summer. Clubs from England, Turkey and Spain are monitoring his situation.
Marseille did not activate the €20m option to buy Vermeeren, and he returned to RB Leipzig earlier this summer. The 21-year-old is now looking for greener pastures to stabilise his career. A move to Tottenham might provide the midfielder with much-needed stability, whilst offering him another chance to work with De Zerbi. The Belgian would be a smart option to replace Bergvall in De Zerbi’s squad.
However, unless the Spurs boss guarantees Vermeeren regular minutes and a prominent role in his squad, a move does not look like happening. We could very well see Vermeeren ending up moving elsewhere from the Red Bull Arena and not to North London.
